No Longer Panicked

If you can import last year's return and most of this year's 1099's, then Turbo Tax is great. However, you still have to double check everything as you often need to provide missing details. Best way to do this is to use Step by Step and review or edit or update everything you imported as this will cover most of the missing details. Don't like having to enter mailing addresses for every charity. All in all it gets better every year. Automatically carries everything over to the state return so that is a breeze.
What's great about it: Thorough, Easy to Use, Accurate Calculations
What's not so great: Not enough help/outside links available

What a surprise refund
on April 4, 2013

I've used Turbo Tax for many years and encouraged family, friends, and co-workers to give Turbo Tax a try. It is relativly easy to use. I encourage taxpayers to take one step at a time and not get overwhelmed.
However, the 2012 Tax frustrated me to no end due to state tax error work-around. Writen instructions were fair but still confussing. My husband and I tried several times to get the errors corrected. After several atempts we finally got the right combination and the errors went away.
What's great about it: My refund was double what I had expected.
What's not so great: State Tax ERROR just about drove me crazy!!!

Great software!
on April 4, 2013

I have used TurboTax for quite a few years, and I have never had a problem. One year my husband decided to have our taxes prepared by a "professional". It cost more than the software, we had to make several trips to meet with her, and it was a complete pain. And she didn't find anything that we had missed! Unless you have a complicated return that you do not understand, stick with the software!

My Experience with Turbotax
on April 4, 2013

For example, Entered 1099-INT and 1099-DIV data, but Schedule B was not generated. I later found out that if the amount of dividends/interest was less than $1500.00 Schdule B is not generated, but it can be forced to be generated by an option on the form only (not on the step-by-step interview). It took me a while to figure that out. It is important for the user of this product to know this information, perhaps in FAQs.
What's great about it: All the heavy lifting is accommondated nicely
What's not so great: No direct answers to resolve common sense questions

I wouldn't attempt to file without Turbotax

Turbo tax turns what would normally be a tedious task into a very simple, easy to follow process. Even if my taxes were complex enough that I needed professional tax advice, I would still use Turbotax to verify my tax return.
What's great about it: Makes it easy to make sure everything is entered in the right place
What's not so great: I don't like the fact that adding a small amount of investment income causes you to recommend upgrades

Tom's review - royalty income
on April 4, 2013

I realize that probably very few of your clients have royalty income. However, this has been a difficult area for me ever since I started using TurboTax in 1993. This year was the worst yet!! I enter my royalty data using the Schedule E worksheet. There is a drop down box to mark the kind of income one is reporting (#6 for royalty income). However, after entering the data (the name of the royalty payor, amount. etc.), when I go to the Schedule E, the name of the asset is blank. In the past I have merely overriden that field and entered the name of the Oil company. That did not work this year. The overriden fields would NOT print. The only way I could make it transfer the data was to click the "no entry" on the drop down box. This resulted in an "error" on final check (about 70 of them to be exact). I really wish you would spend more time working the bugs out of the royalty income section. This is a recurring problem, and the only real problem/complaint I have ever had with TurboTax.
Thank you for looking into this matter.
Tom
What's great about it: Interview section is good
What's not so great: Handling of royalty income is very difficult
