a nightmare trying to get it to work and the old installation kept taking control, eventually the new version disappeared from the app list on windows 10, but the program kept running in the background--unable to uninstall it

Webroot Antivirus is fantastic. It's the best I've ever tried. It runs smoothly, Doesn't consume resources and you never, and I mean NEVER get noticed it is running. No ads, no pushes to buy another product, nothing!! And the antivirus protection is out of this world.
