Great watch but not much of an upgrade.

I love the watch and improved brightness. However, it is not much of an upgrade from the Fenix 8 other than that. Noticeably, the battery life is no better and possibly a little worse if you have the display on all the time as I prefer. In golf mode, the 8 goes back to time when pressing the bottom right button but on the 9 this does nothing and that is unfortunate as it would be nice to see the time without having to leave the app. Overall, I would not recommend this as an upgrade for anyone who already has a Fenix 8 and only a minor upgrade from the 7 which I also had. Still, I like the brighter display as I get older and it still handles all the biking, running and golf that I do along with about a hundred other uses that I rarely choose to learn.
Upgraded to the Fenix 9 Pro 51mm inReach edition from an Epix Gen 2 47mm, and overall, I am very happy with the purchase. Band and Fit: I got the version with the fabric Velcro strap and absolutely love the combination. It is way better than fumbling with standard bands that constantly slip out of the retention loops. I will never go back to old school silicone straps. I was a bit nervous about jumping from 47mm to the 51mm screen size, but after two weeks, there is no turning back. I would never go back to 47mm. Display and Flashlight: Notifications and general watch operation feel pretty similar to my Epix, but the screen and flashlight are the most profound differences. The display is so much brighter and crisper than my old watch. Also, I had no idea I would use the built in flashlight as much as I do. I end up using it all the time. Storage: The 64GB of onboard storage is a huge plus. I was able to copy all my personal MP3 and audiobook files directly over to the watch, meaning I do not need to carry my phone to listen to playlists while out on a phone free run. inReach Capabilities: The inReach feature turned out to be the one caveat for me. It is really not tailored for daily city use. It requires a separate 8 dollar a month Garmin subscription, and you cannot just add it to a cellular carrier plan like a Verizon iPad. Plus, for anyone to call or text you, they have to use the Garmin Messenger app, which is a pretty clunky setup for everyday communication. You are much better off just using the standard built in Bluetooth to your phone for day to day use. That said, if you were hiking off grid in the Rocky Mountains with no cell service, I can see it being extremely valuable. It is better than nothing when you are out of range. Bottom Line: If you do not need satellite capabilities, the inReach feature might be overkill, but the hardware, screen, flashlight, storage, and fabric band make the watch itself an outstanding upgrade.
Thought I was upgrading from my Fenix 7x Pro solar to this 9 pro AMOLED. Screen looks great of course but there's just no comparison IMO to the MIP screen in direct sunlight. I golf a couple times a week and found the AMOLED screen not as bright and not as functional for my activities. Not to mention it's current issues with shot recognition. Returned it and kept my 7x until Garmin makes a new thinner solar MIP than my 7
I’ve been wearing this for three weeks and it’s been an incredible change. I was an Apple Watch fan since the beginning and was nervous to switch. As I became more focused on my workouts but more importantly daily running, it became same clear I needed a change. The metrics and training data have changed everything for the better. Also ai don’t really miss my Apple Watch anymore. I will say I had the cellular watch so now I need to carry my phone with me but the trade off was worth it. I’ll never go back now, Garmin Fenix 9 Pro is incredible.
