A nice upgrade to my Acurite Atlas that I’ve had for over 5 years. Got ‘em both mounted on 10’ poles at each corner of my deck
I would recommend this to a friend!

Works, But Not Impressed

The Acurite Optimus weather station meets all its advertised criteria but falls short in precision, extra features and day to day usability.
TLDR:
The weather station works as you would expect, mostly easy setup and good (optional) accessories, the outdoor sensor is sleek but the single solar panel limits aspirating fan runtime, also it has no UV sensor. The display is functional but hard to read/use due to small text, very limited data record viewing, and slow button-based navigation (not a touchscreen). The new app is difficult to setup for returning Acurite customers, has limited data graphing and is overall less complete then their other app. Supposedly it’s more reliable but seems like a downgrade from previous weather stations.
Full thoughts below:
Unboxing/Setup
The packaging is indeed much improved and if you buy the accessories in the same order, it all comes in one organized box system. The unit assembly and setup is straightforward, folding out the arms is simple BUT make sure to not mess up attaching the wind vane since it’s directional and held on with a plastic friction fit (if you force it on the wrong way it would read incorrect wind direction and the plastic friction fit may weaken if trying to remove the vane and reattach it). I had no issues connecting the display and seemed to work right away. Notably, you do not need wifi for the unit to work, it will display an estimated future forecast for the next 12-24 hrs just based on the station readings.
Optimus Outdoor Sensor
The station itself looks sleek, refined and is quite low profile making it easier to mount and be less intrusive in your yard. In general all the sensors seem to work including the wind, temperature, humidity, rain etc. However, this design comes with downsides such as only having one solar panel to power the aspirating fan needed for accurate temperature readings in direct sun. With only one panel, I’ve had issues with high temps in the evening with the sun still hitting the side of the unit and heating up the sensor while the solar panel side doesn’t always get enough sun to power the fan. My Acurite Atlas station in the same location does not have this issue since it has 3 solar panels. Also the Optimus lacks a light/UV sensor, which I would expect it to have given it’s more expensive than the Atlas which does have one. It also only reports the temperature to the nearest degree, which again is disappointing to see the Optimus reporting 24°C when my Atlas says it’s 23.5°C. Perhaps this isn’t as important for Fahrenheit, but when using Celsius the extra decimal precision is very useful to have.
Display
I’m not satisfied with the Optimus display and it’s probably my biggest issue with this weather station. The main screen is just too busy looking, important info is not easily glanceable, the non-touchscreen navigation is clunky and laggy, and it has no data records on the display besides a numeric list for today and yesterday. Also the default background colour makes it even harder to read, who thought green text on a green or blue background was a good idea? I had to use the black background and fiddle with the brightness/contrast/tint settings just to make it somewhat usable. Furthermore, the text is just too thin and small on many items to be seen at any distance beyond 3ft. I also don’t like the wind vane indicator, which just has tick marks in a circle rather than arrows and no NSEW letters on the compass ends. And in addition to not having decimal temperature readings, the lightning detection only shows a distance range instead of a single estimated distance. This is unlike previous displays and even the new app which does show an single estimated range. Additionally, I had to adjust the calibration of the indoor temperature sensor on the display; it was off my at least 1°C and while I’m glad you can adjust the calibration, it just shouldn’t be something you need to worry about. Compared to my original (now discontinued) Atlas touchscreen display, it is night and day, it had easy-to-read bold text, graphs, monthly records, and everything was viewable on the main screen without needing a ‘flex view.’ In theory the Optimus display could be updated with new firmware and maybe different view options but I highly doubt any major changes will come, the first firmware update didn’t even reboot the display so who knows if it even did anything.
Acurite Now App
Plain and simple, the old MyAcurite app is much better than this new one. While the main app dashboard actually looks nicer, several small things are worse, like the lack of a time-since-last-refresh indicator. The graphs are way too small, have fewer categories, and only shows one data point per hour/day/month. Also I had issues signing into the app, I tried to use my existing MyAcurite account but it said incorrect password. When I tried to reset my password it said no account was found, but then I tried to create a new account with my same email and password as with MyAcurite, I think it said the account already existed. I ended up creating a new account for this app with the same email but a different password and it worked, so now I have two Acurite app accounts, not confusing at all. The app doesn’t seem very polished either with some logos and areas getting cutoff by the screen borders. I’m also not sure why the layout is like a smart home app, maybe Acurite is planning on launching more home related products in the future? I like the idea of integrating and running automations based on my weather station but I don’t need another whole smart home app for that. Plus it doesn’t even support the new Matter smart home standard which basically defeats the purpose of this.
Conclusion
While the Optimus does deliver all the advertised features and a sleek new design, it feels like a downgrade from the Atlas. Perhaps the ‘lifetime warranty’ means improved longevity and reliability but only time will tell.

Not up to expectations

Have had other AcuRite stations for years. When I was buying a station for my workplace I was excited at the new Optimus, but honestly, wishing I stuck with an Iris. The Optimus uses a new app, it lacks a lot of functionality of the old one by a landslide. You don’t have the lightning detection, charting and other data at your fingertips. Setup was difficult and the instructions are not clear.
The positives- the base station (other than the very fragile antenna) is great and easy to read. The new Optimus is far smaller than previous models and is less obtrusive. It doesn’t require a separate hardwired WiFi connection for the app.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Best AcuRite station yet!

This weather station has it all! I recently received this station. Easy set up and the AcuRite NOW app integrates very well with the station. The folding arm design is very unique, but this station packs so much data collection in a small package. The look of the display is very military like, but the LCD display is very clear and updates often. Set up was a breeze if you read thru the setup manual it's pretty straight forward. Having had the Iris before and currently was running the Atlas this is a welcome change to the footprint of the station. The lightning detection feature works great. Having had multiple types and models of weather stations over the years this is now my go to! Another great weather station from AcuRite.

Great Hardware...App has taken 2 steps back

The new hardware is great but the app has taken two steps back. There is no phone widget option currently like with My AcuRite. I also liked having the line graph details in greater detail in the old app. More colorful, maybe a little more modern but most people that have these things are data nerds and enjoy current conditions in a widget without even opening an app.

Optimus definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The devise was easy to install, accurate, and very informative. You get all of the data and weather information you could possibly need and its easy to view on the in-home Acurite monitor OR on the app when you are away from your home.
