Problems with doors
on December 30, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Problems:
I have had this now for 2 weeks. When it was delivered the left door with the icemaker in it was lower and not aligned with the other door. My husband and I took the door off and added a washer to align the door. Prior to that the door would not stay open and even after alignment and adding the washer it still does not stay open making it difficult to get things in/out. I called the repair tech from where I bought it and he took the door off and found the water lines that were going into the door were causing the door not to stay open. Design Flaw.
I am still waiting for a response back to see how this can be fixed.
Pluses: I like the middle and bottom drawers, makes it easier to get to things you need, you just need to remember where you put everything.

Doors aren't aligned
on January 16, 2026

After weeks of looking at different brands, I decided on the Whirlpool because of the reliability of the brand. Unfortunately, I must give the same review as above because I have the same issue. The left door with the ice maker is shorter than the other door and it won't stay open. Is this a flaw in the way it is made?

A refrigerator is a complex appliance, and its proper function relies heavily on two foundational setup steps: ensuring it is perfectly level and that its doors are correctly aligned. Neglecting these initial adjustments can lead to a cascade of performance and maintenance problems that diminish the appliance's efficiency and lifespan.
Consequences of Poor Leveling and Misaligned Doors:
When a refrigerator is not level from side-to-side and front-to-back, or when the doors are improperly aligned, several critical issues can arise:
Difficulty Closing Doors: Doors may swing open or fail to close completely on their own, requiring manual force. This constant strain can damage hinges over time.
Compromised Seals (Poor Gaskets): A misalignment can prevent the door gasket (the flexible seal) from making full, consistent contact with the cabinet frame. This creates air leaks.
Energy Inefficiency and Temperature Issues: Air leaks caused by poor seals allow warm, moist air to infiltrate the cooling compartments. The refrigerator then has to work harder and run longer to maintain the set temperature, leading to higher energy consumption and inconsistent cooling, which can spoil food faster.
Excessive Frost Buildup: The influx of moist air drastically increases the rate of frost formation, particularly in the freezer compartment. This forces the automatic defrost system to work overtime, or, in severe cases, can overwhelm the system, leading to ice buildup on interior coils.
Faulty Door Switch Contact: Many modern refrigerators use a door switch to control the interior light and often the cooling fan operation. If a door is significantly misaligned, it may fail to fully depress the door switch, causing the interior light to remain on (generating unnecessary heat) or the fan not to cycle correctly.
Essential Steps for Optimal Setup:

Achieving optimal performance requires a methodical approach, ensuring the refrigerator's base is stable and level before any door adjustments are attempted.
Level the Refrigerator (The Foundation):
Priority One: The refrigerator must be level in both horizontal planes—side-to-side and front-to-back. Use a carpenter's level placed on the top edge of the appliance cabinet to verify this.
Adjusting Feet/Rollers: Refer to the appliance's specific Owner's Manual or Installation Instructions for the correct procedure for raising or lowering the adjustable front leveling feet or rollers. Typically, raising the front slightly (a small rake) is recommended to allow the doors to gently swing shut due to gravity.
Check the Floor: Before adjusting the unit, confirm that the floor beneath it is stable and level itself. Placing a refrigerator on an uneven or flexible surface will make fine-tuning impossible.
Stabilization with Weight (The Load Factor):
Add Food and Contents: Refrigerator doors and hinges are engineered to perform best under their normal operating load. A new, empty refrigerator may show minor alignment issues that disappear once the unit is fully stocked with food and beverages. The weight provides stability and natural tension.
Fine-Tune Door Adjustment (The Final Polish):
Manufacturer's Instructions are Key: Only after the unit is level and partially loaded should the doors be adjusted. This process often involves tightening, loosening, or adjusting specific hinge bolts, shims, or tilt mechanisms located at the top or bottom of the door. The exact method is unique to the make and model (e.g., French door vs. side-by-side) and must be followed explicitly using the guide provided in the Owner's Manual or Installation Instructions.
Goal: The final adjustment should ensure that the tops of the doors are flush, the gaps between the doors and the cabinet are uniform, and the gasket achieves a perfect, airtight seal around the entire perimeter.
