My sister first got one of these for our parents a few years ago. I picked up two more for my in-laws and our own this year. It’s so easy to share photos with all the grand parents of my kids. The ability to customize the slide show is amazing. My overall favorite aspect of these beautiful frames is no subscription fee. The whole thing just works flawlessly.

Great Image Quality, Expensive, Subpar Interface

Image quality really is excellent. The Carver Mat is expensive, and the screen resolution and color rendering quality are the reason why.
The interfaces, both physical and digital, are really disappointing. I knew it didn’t have a touch screen when I bought it, but my dad (recipient of this gift) kept trying to swipe and pinch-to-zoom, as one does with a screen, and he kept getting frustrated. The touch strip controls on the top of the frame are neither reactive nor intuitive to use, and because my dad has dementia, he can't learn new things, so he kept going back to swiping and pinching the screen in frustration.
The app is truly terrible. Syncing with a Google Photos shared album mostly works, but once you've chosen to sync to a Google Photos album, it's no longer possible to manually add photos or videos through the app. Video is not supported for Google Photos albums, and you have to remember to manually open the app every time you add photos to the shared album to sync the shared album with the frame. Also can't upload videos through the web interface.
I didn’t think the lack of battery or on-board storage was going to be an issue until my dad (again, who has dementia) unplugged the frame and walked away with it, at which point it of course stopped working. He can't remember it has zero autonomy, so it mostly sits around unplugged and dead wherever he last forgot it.
Dealing with a person with dementia makes you very aware when something is not intuitive, and everything about the Carver Mat is counterintuitive. When you really start using it, you realise the only application it's suited for is hanging on a wall, but it can't even do that because of its bulky base and plug-in requirement.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
