A toxic plastic small may cause damage

The mat will break up after a year or so of use on a low to medium pile apartment quality carpet. The smell of plastic was so bad that the replacement is still in the garage. Chemicals from the mat may cause some pigments in engraved documents to sulphurize causing oranges and reds to turn black. It may be possible to wash off the worst of the toxic chemicals with a 1:4 mix of vinegar and water.
After reading a number of reviews on various floor mats we decided on this one. The mat does not slide protects our hardwood floor and you can see through to the floor underneath. These were all factors in why we bought it. The office chair we have rolls very easily on the mat. It smelled pretty bad coming out of the box but airing it out for a few days solved that as well as helping to straighten it out. It's only a week old so we'll see how it fares over time.
Frankly I cannot believe I paid[$] for what is basically a small piece of thin plastic.. however Staples was the only place that had anything that would protect our new floors from our rolling office chairs so I bought it.Am hoping it does the job over time it's just down only 2 weeks as of this writing.
