These folders simply don't form that sharp bottom edge seen in the pictures. The file folders we place in them simply push them down into a curve. The only way to make these look like that would be a fair amount of creasing and hand work but the thin cardboard support would need to be glued in I suppose. We returned these (because we already had a box from a year or two ago languishing in the office) and replaced them with others with accordion-style sides. We are finding useful expansion folders are tough to find.
Using these with the inserts works great if you have file folders full of stuff or a large # of related folders. Or you can ignore the inserts and use them a regular hanging folders.
