Disappointed Geocacher
on December 16, 2025
Posted by: Twenty Year Geocacher
After my wife and I have been geocaching for 20 years using various Garmin handheld GPS's (etrex Legend C, GPSmap 60CSx, GPSMAP 64sx, Oregon 450 and Oregon 600) we thought this new eTrex Touch would be a good replacement for our current 10 year old Oregon 600 which is developing button issues. We were sorely disappointed. It would appear that Garmin has included Geocaching on this device as an afterthought. It definitely is not user friendly. Swiping up/down, left/right and tapping for other items is not nearly as effective as on a cell phone resulting in undesirable actions. I was having difficulty with that sitting on a sofa at home, can't even think of doing that in the field.
Setting it up for geocaching use is certainly not intuitive at all. Once set up, some actions do not reliably occur. These are such things as looking at past logs or hints for caches. Sometimes when going back to read the description or hint again, they are not there. One relatively simple issue is that the device does not seem to be able to change the coordinate notation reliably. After changing it in the settings to the desired notation it does not carry through when using the notation in other locations.
The positives are the promised battery life, nice size and good maps. Beyond that, not much more that we can give positive feedback. Happily, we were able to return it without a hassle.

A lot in a compact size

I've had it for a few weeks and like it very much. Its satellite connections are amazing, I can even connect in my living room. Though the screen size is small, it is very clear and easy to read. I added the city streets map and there is still almost half of the 32GB built-in memory left. I have not been on a serious walk or hike yet, but took it on a 250 mile ferry ride and was impressed with the map showing our location and speed. I think this is a very cool device, and compact enough to always have it with me.

Not very impressive

I hopped this would be better, but I wound up returning it. The interface was very outdated, and slow. There's a noticeable delay in loading even basic maps as you scroll around with your finger. You have to download and save any Maps+ overlays to the device in 2 mile squares and it doesn't have enough memory to handle any significant amount of mileage. So it would kind of work if I was going on a 6 mile day hike, but it couldn't handle the data to do a multi day 40-50mile trip. Very disappointed.
