I was hoping for something new this Christmas but a train was already released previously. Pretty much the same. Not happy with the price increase either
The train has a lot of visual appeal, but it works best as a stationary display. I don't understand how this set design was approved. The clever cam-driven movements put so much drag on the wheels that the wheels simply don't turn. Also, the design of the wheel attachment to the axles on some of the cars makes fitting the wheels to the tracks a tricky process of trial and error. I ordered the parts to power the train (backordered), but I have little hope that the train will function properly given the design flaws.
I have never had anything but stellar experiences with Lego, so that could be why this set was such a disappointment. It looks cute, but functionally it’s an epic fail. The bear is extremely difficult to get to move, and gets stuck extremely often. The smoke stack isn’t much better. I tried the power up function with a non-LEGO motor (since it’s sold out and CRAZY expensive), and it looks absolutely ridiculous because it just goes much too fast. It’s a cute set, but a major headache and doesn’t function well at all. If you just want to display it, it’s fine. But it’s terrible to play with.
We buy the Christmas set every year for many years. This one is 30% more expensive, less pieces, underwhelming build experience, just learning you have to pay even more to have it actually run. All the previous Christmas sets have been so great. This year was a massive disappointment. I'd definitely skip this year if you are on the fence.
New comer to the Winter Village series, as my first was the train station from about 5 years ago or so. Although I’ve felt the recent offerings have been a bit homogenous, I haven’t regretted buying any of them . . . Until this set! Lots has been said already of this set, and I doubt that I’m the first to comment on the following: the wheels on the front of the locomotive and the bear car look unfinished. The bear itself also seems like it’s missing some details. The front wheel bogey (is that the right word?) annoyingly spins almost 360 degrees The 3-D printed piece, imho, was not worth whatever trade offs were made so that it could be included. The parts of the printed train are too loose so the mechanics don’t really even work. I definitely would’ve rather had magnetic connectors between the cars than the technic pins. If prices are going to increase as we all know that they are, it can be a struggle to still show value to consumers, but that’s the challenge of retail these days. This set misses the mark.
It doesn't come with the power up feature, even though the ad shows it powered. Annoying...and the parts needed to actually finish the set are not available.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about your disappointment. The set is designed to be compatible with the Powered Up components, which are sold separately and noted on the box. Please give us a shout at LEGO.build/Service-BV, so we can see if we can help find any alternative components that would work for your set.
I didn’t realize that I needed to purchase additional components to activate the train, and when I did the parts are not available, exceptionally disappointed
