Why ditch the magnetic buffers?

I'm an adult builder with a young builder who likes to play with my vintage train sets. While he's not great at building things other than Duplo at the moment, he can start/stop my trains with the remotes and couple/uncouple the cars with minimal assistance.
Which is my biggest problem -- why on earth were the magnet style buffers omitted?? I understand the 18+ marketing, but this should be able to be played with by a young kid. Especially since it's shown in photos with the Family Tree set being assembled by people of all ages.
So not only is my kiddo unable to couple/uncouple the cars because of the technic pieces, but this effectively isn't compatible with the previous Winter Village train without modifications.
Very disappointed with this set.

As an avid lego builder I have done almost every set from Lego...not joking...I have never really been disappointed until this one..I bought it along with the Christmas tree and had my son build both...things were fine until we tried to play with it. We added the motor..Fresh batteries...and nothing...barely moved. We removed the moving bear and smokestack parts and it will now move...but not very well. They also went really cheap on the train car connectors...but I assume ita because the magnetic ones wouldn't have worked...poor design...wish I could get my.money back on this one.

I have been adding to my winter village for about 5 - 6 years now. Compared to all of the previous sets. This one really disappointed me. I felt like size, piece count, price and and overall experience to be a let down. I work in the grocery industry and during the holidays it can be stressful. I look forward to building my holidays sets over the coarse of November to help decompress. I finished the build in a matter of days. Instead of getting to work on it for a while. This is my first bad review but come on Lego you need to do better.

I have purchased the winter village set since it started and I must say this set was extremely disappointing. Not only did they increase the price by 30% but the build took half the time it normally does! Only 2 mini-figures came with the set! This is unfortunate and this will more than likely be the last year I purchase this set.

The only thing I wish about this that would be that he came with basic power functions from the start. It’s an iconic recreation of the classic Christmas train to go around the tree. The least you should do is make sure that the abilities to go around the tree are in the same opening box.

I want to love this set but I HATE it.

As others have mentioned this set is just poorly designed.
The engine looks 'okay' but I agree with another reviewer that as the main car the wheel structure is really basic and underwhelming. It could have been better.
My BIGGEST complaint is the panda car. It's awful. It just doesn't work. If I move it forward the wheels spin once and then just lock up. I don't have the engineering understanding to explain why but it just will not roll correctly while moving the panda arms etc. as it was designed to do.
The caboose car is my favorite of all of them. I think it's a really cool holiday design. Sadly, I was missing a piece critical for the bow on top so now I'm left waiting 8+ WEEKS for a replacement.
As someone that has loved EVERY Lego build I've ever done, this one was just SUCH a disappointment. Do not buy this set - or buy it and don't open it just so you have the 'first 3d printed piece ever' in case its worth millions someday.

I get excited about the winter village collection reveal every year and purchased every set. I purchased this one even though the reviews weren’t great and boy were they right. Not worth the money like you have had in years past. Build was okay but hard to mesh with other trains in previous years.
