Power up a failure

The build itself is fine. Not terribly original, but fine. The problem is adding the power functions to it. The engine is simply not heavy enough or something to give the wheels traction throughout a track. I have four other Lego trains I’ve added power to and this is the first one with this problem. I’m going to try moving the motor to the ‘coal’ car where the battery weight can help, but this is a huge disappointment.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello, we've been seeing a lot of reviews stating that the train barely moves. We got ours to fly! TIP: we put the Explorer Train Powered-Up motor in the Holiday Express Train. TIP, you must press the "+" button multiple times to get it moving faster. It seems to max out at level 12. If you just press the "+" button once it hardly moves. Good luck!
My grandsons and I build a new Lego Christmas house every yeah. The train this year was great addition, was fun to build and gave us a chance to talk while we built it. The boys really enjoyed building it
My grandson will be 8years old in a few days. He has been playing with Legos for five years. It's a challenge that he enjoys. He has learned to organize the pieces and to follow the instructions at a young age because there is nothing to read. The older the age on the box the more he enjoys assembling the project. This has taught him a lot about skills and patiennce.
I bought this for myself and my family to add to our Winter Village holiday layout, which we have been building since the line was introduced. We look forward to buying and building the new set every year and have happily grown our collection. I combine the Lego Winter Village sets with my Lionel holiday trains to create a fun Christmas tree layout. This is a decent set, but based on the price I assumed it came with the motorizing Powered Up components. Please understand that you will need to purchase the motorizing components separately as the set does NOT include them. I'm not a fan of Powered Up due to the cost, so I'm planning to use some existing Power Functions components but am unsure if I can squeeze in the IR receiver.
