I’ve been using HRB software for many years, after tiring of the competition’s product after they stripped out some small business features from their mid-level product to force self-employed folks to pay more for the next level up. HRB has served me very well. The interview works well and the program is well thought through. I did find a gap in the premium program this year: It doesn’t calculate income by quarter for purposes of determining underpayment penalty. I rolled over an IRA into a Roth in December, so needed to calculate income by quarter. HRB made me fill out the relevant IRS form, which was a bit confusing. I realize that’s not an everyday circumstance, but it’s not all THAT unusual, so I was disappointed in that one aspect. Other than that, I’m very pleased.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents

Had great difficulty with the state program. Purchased the premium software the last several years. This year the state, Louisiana, required form R-19000 to be submitted. However the form was not in the program.
Cons: Hard to import documents

I have been using this for over 5 years and it works well. However, it does need work to satisfy taxpayers who have businesses. The home rental section needs to be a module that loads the previous years input and it needs to be designed to handle multiple properties. (Like advertised) Also, a summary page of all inputs for multiple years would be helpful.

Why would a financial institution blackball H R Bl

I am a repeat customer and experienced a problem with the download of a financial institution's data because they had either not been asked or refused to participate with H R Block's program. Since this happened last year as well, non-participation by any financial institution should be a non-starter. After entering pages of data I finally was able to submit the return to the IRS.

Cons: Hard to import documents

Estimated Taxes portion is a disaster

HR Block why in the world did you change the Estimated Tax part of the program to some goofy interview where you have to predict future unpredictable stuff. For years I used the -100% of last years taxes option- to figure out the Estimated Taxes so I won't have to pay a penalty. That is gone. After wasting hours trying to get the Estimated Taxes done I just threw in the towel and printed the 1040-ES form and even that is screwed up. Instead of printing the the amount of estimated taxes that I entered in the interview it just prints a zero. So now I will have to mark out the zero with a pen and write in the amount I calculated for the Estimated taxes. I spent more time doing the Estimated Taxes than the whole rest of the tax return.You really dropped the ball on this on.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
