I have used H & R Block tax software for years. I love it and highly recommend it to everyone. It is simple to use, yet it is very robust. It anticipates problems and makes recommendations for next years taxes. Each year you can start from scratch, import just your personal information or you can import everything from your on line banking to W-2s. It can also be used to complete state taxes with an add on program upgrade and it even offers to be their if you get audited. I use it for all of these reasons and the fact that with five children I can help them to do their taxes with this program for free since the low purchase price allows for the owner to submit five different returns. Of course this program allows for secure electronic filing and direct deposit of your refund. It is much quicker than the old snail mail system.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
For the most part H&R Block Deluxe accommodates previous year filings and current year 1040 DIVs. But in recent years DIV reporting of trivial foreign earnings and tax payment [for example, by Franklin Templeton World Fund] triggers HRB software to generate rather useless forms & prompts that demand users/I supply a foreign address of residence and related dates -- when they/I have NEVER been out of the US during the year. When I try to file the return, the software review of filing forms demands that this nonexistent, fictitious data be supplied. As far as I can see, I have no recourse other than to delete the useless forms. This seems to me a travesty of ignorance about the provided software's clumsy, unhelpful, & indeed frustrating handling of DIVs reporting Foreign earnings and taxes. Obviously, HRB Deluxe assumes you can only have Foreign earnings and taxes if you live outside the US during the tax year -- surely a delusional premise for any tax professional to subscribe to.
