I have used H&R Block for years because it is less money than Turbo Tax. I have found it to be very unintuitive, particularly with respect to dealing with the accuracy checks. When accuracy checks are done it would be WAY easier to correct things if you could click on the item that thought to be inaccurate and have it take you directly to the page within the software to go correct it. Instead of that, you are (at best) taken to the actual tax form (rather than the wizard, which would be way easier). Having the option to go directly to the actual tax form might be nice for some people, but it shouldn’t be the default. I also spent 15 minutes troubleshooting a certain issue related to my HSA entries where I had to do my own research regarding how I complete certain parts of the form because the wording in the wizard wasn’t obvious. Overall, the wizard isn’t super intuitive for several types of scenerios.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I've used H&R Block software for a few years now, mostly because I refuse to pay Intuit. It does the job but really could be much better in providing supporting information about what I need to file.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Hard to import documents

Great Software - Needs some work on 1099 Downloads

Overall, the software worked fine. The hardest part of using it might occur at the end, when working through any exceptions - usually found with my 1099 data.
An aspect of the operation one needs to be careful with is the downloading of 1099 information from investment companies such as Fidelity, T-Rowe Price, Morgan Stanley, etc. If the user has multiple accounts at an investment company, as I do, one needs to make sure all the firm's 1099 reports are ready before executing the download. For example, if the user has 4 taxable accounts at Fidelity, and downloads 3 out of 4 that are posted, and then goes back some time later for the missing 4th one, the software will download the first 3 again as well as the missing 4th one (creating a duplication). I am not sure how this could be programmed to prevent this, but H&R Block's software engineers might be able to come up with a way to issue a warning to the user that there could be a duplicate record. This design aspect impacts the dividend, interest and capital gains reporting areas.
I like the fact that the software imports last years H&R data seamlessly - it fills in a number of the demographic fields which makes life simpler. And I have not had a return bounce after using the software now for approximately 5 years.
One last aspect I find confusing is how it reports two taxpayer's share of income, deductions, etc.
