Greatly simplifies tax preparation for those with somewhat more complicated returns. One big drawback for me is that it is difficult to trace backwards from a number on the 1040 or any of the required schedules which itself is the total of multiple numbers from other documents, especially if you have multiple 1099s. (For spreadsheet users, it needs something like a "trace precedents" command.) I actually had to go to the IRS to find instructions for a particular item to determine how to arrive at a final number which itself is the sum of numbers from multiple 1099s. This really shouldn't be necessary. I just don't like to file a return without first understanding every item on it. Otherwise, the software is most helpful.
My second year of the use of software. I was challenging in that some of the directions weren't clear enough (I 'm 84) at first but after repeating some of the required functions, got the "hang" of it!
It is unfortunate that when you purchase the software you also have to pay for the returns (both state and federal) to be electronically filed. Also, the software cannot properly handle 1099B forms for partnerships and 1099DIV's for stocks
