I am unsure if trust your program. Using the Joint / Separate table after filling in the data, it puts data in the wrong column. Several of my deductions were input into the spouse column. Since your program can't transfer taxpayer information from one page to another, trusting the program to be correct in calculating is not possible! Next year I will be looking into another program!
So many issues; where do I start? 1) Some imported W-2 now have 'X' in part of the SS for security reasons. Software should pick those up after import and not wait until the end to flag them. User feels like they have to go back to the beginning to fix this. 2) State carryover losses - why do I have to manually remember to check the box every year? You should see that from the imported prior year's taxes and fill it in automatically. No excuses here! 3) 8863 education credit - question about 2019 1098-T box 2 is wrong. I checked the actual IRS instructions. 4) MA tax - "undergraduate Tuition Paid" should clearly indicate what constitute as "paid". Does it include loans, scholarships, etc. These details matter. 5) MA dependent info - if filers claim more dependents on MA than Fed, enter the additional dependents here. The UI only has space to enter 1 additional dependent. If you have more than 1 dependent to enter, gotta go to Whole Form to enter. Bad UI design doesn't check the number of dependents entered. Ridiculous. 6) Kept giving warning about itemized deductions during the final check. Problem went away in one of the updates. Prior year import tells whether itemized deduction was used so why ask? Sloppy. 7) When AGI is too large for AOTC, software should help/suggest shifting AOTC claim to dependents to maximize returns. Summary - the more I use your software (over 20 yrs now), the more I find little things that are just irritating. The little things that are wrong shows a lack of testing, a lack of care, a lack of detail. The MA state program has lousy "help" context - most of those popups barely say anything useful. At the end of the day, it looks like the program is just a wrapper around a spreadsheet with partial phrases copied from the IRS instructions.
This year my e file was rejected by IRS two times. I ended up mailing in because costumer service did not know how to help me. It was their only suggestion.
Last year I had to pay and I always mail in a check. No way to contact IRS this year also.
