The Deluxe version was fine, but it is incomplete for me. Occasionally I need to attach a "blank page" or two in my return to explain something that requires explanation in my return. I assign the blank form a title such as "Explanation for form 8949 copy 1" and then enter SSN and other information that needs to be supplemented on the form 8949. The Deluxe doesn't provide for that capability. It should. Also, the K-1 form (form 1065) has lines that don't forward to any other form. It would be very useful if the K-1 were more complete in its transfer to other forms in the return. For example, line 13 entry W is one that I had an entry on the K-1 I received from the company, but I had no idea how to include the information and still be able to e-file. I finally ignored the entry, but I prefer not to do that.
I really like using the H&R Block software & especially Deduction Pro. I've been "going through" "stuff" that belonged to my parents & grandparents (& my own stuff), and have oodles of items that are donated; & the Deduction Pro portion of this software allows me to itemize donations & provides a value so that I don't have to make guesses. This "going through" stuff has been a multi-year project, and I know I still have several more years to go - whew! This part of the program has been a life-saver ;-)
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
Anything outside the basics they tend to do a poor job with. And the NJ state return interview explains very little and leaves much to be desired. If you have a fairly straightforward return and know a little bit going in, this software is great. Once things get into unusual territory, prepare to spend a ton of time doing your own research and trying to guess how to fit it all in to the software.
Everything is well organized, accurate, and best of all there is a data memory from year to year. The audit at the end is helpful to identify questionable areas to revisit.
A great tax help until they suggest you fill out the Unincorporated Business Tax Return form. Like, why are you even showing me a form to fill out? YOU fill it out Tax Cut- You ask questions and I answer, and YOU fill out the form like you do with everything else. Otherwise great.
HR Block software is now designed to try and be idiot-proof. But if your circumstances produce events such as no printer, or filing at the last minute, you just can’t find another way around lack of printer, or needing to somehow save specific documents to flash drive to print elsewhere, you can not find a way to accomplish this with HR Block. At end, trying to find ways to eFile State return, the next button does not take you anywhere. Other navigation buttons also produce no results. If you try to Efile federal and state together, it makes you pay both fees, even though you have free filing for federal. Won’t let you eFile State unless Federal return is accepted by IRS. If you are filing at last minute, Federal can take days to accept, and you can’t file State return by mail, if your printer is not working. My mind does not work like the programmer who designed the tax software. Never experienced this before withHR Block tax software. Problematic programming and navigation in above mentioned circumstances.
I’ve been using this software since it was Kiplinger Tax Cut. Generally it’s been a piece of cake but for some reason this year the interview and subsequent forms filling etc were a bit obtuse. We moved during the year, had partnership K-1, and retired, and distributions so things were more complex. 2020 will be simpler.
