I like the H&R Block software in that I've used it for years, and I'm used to the interface. The drawbacks include price and the requirement to pay more if I have any tax questions. I would suggest allowing one or two interactions with a tax expert to be included in the price of the software.
Interview process for fed and state went well as did direct interaction with forms. Help seemed a little better this year. Inconsistent ability to find out where numbers came from and ridiculously high cost to electronically file for state, so I didn't.
I've used H&R Block software for 7 or 8 years (ever since the other guys tried to charge extra for doing more than one return) and it's been invaluable. It is easy to use, accurate, and fast. I would have given it a 5-star rating except for a small glitch this year: I filled out two 1099-INT's in advance, because I knew how much interest I had earned, before they were actually available at the end of January. Later I downloaded 1099-DIV and 1099-MISC from the same brokerage house, and didn't realize the same 1099-INTs were also downloaded. I had two identical copies of each one, but H&R Block didn't catch that. I found them later myself, when going over the printed return before I filed it.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
I've been using this product for over 15 years. I keep coming back because it makes the chore of tax preparation much easier, and gives me confidence that everything has been considered and handled properly. With the recent tax law changes I now take the standard deduction so I thought I wouldn't need this anymore. But with income from various sources, some subject to different taxes and tax breaks, it still proves worthwhile. And I like that it's from a company whose business is tax preparation so they stand behind the results they give me. Excellent and very worthwhile product.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
I have used the HRBlock tax program for many years now, but this is the first year that I have used the Windows 10 version. During the installation process and again when I first tried to save my return, I encountered an error message saying the operation could not be completed due to lack of proper file permissions.
Upon investigation I determined that the problem was that the HRBlock program was attempting to create a folder and files in my Documents folder. I have Windows 10's "Controlled Folder Access" protection turned on, and this mechanism was blocking the attempted changes to my Documents folder.
While I understand why the HRBlock program was attempting to place its folder and files in my Documents folder, it is surprising that the conflict with Controlled Folder Access has not been anticipated by HRBlock, given that the Controlled Folder Access protection is an antimalware measure that is often recommended by Windows experts. Especially so since CFA is a built-in feature of Windows 10 (at least in recent versions of Win10) and not some random third-party add-on. HRBlock should be configured work out of the box with CFA turned on, rather than simply failing with a terse error message that will likely baffle a non-expert Windows user.
We have been enthusiastic users of HR Block Tax software for several pleasant tax filing years. I am more than happy to recommend this software to anyone, especially first time tax preparation users to use this very helpful tax preparation product. We have never had any difficulty with this easy to use software and have always received good advice that makes sure we do not overlook potential deductions.

Been using it for 20 years now. Easy to follow & good value.
This year was the first time for a state income tax. I missed the state info on the federal form and the attempt in the state form failed and resulted in the loss of data. So I deleted the empty form, started from scratch, did it correctly, and had no problem quickly finishing in about 20 minutes. I was very pleased.
