I have been using H&R Block software for a decade+ for many reasons. I can transfer the basic info from the previous year, which makes beginning a the easy. The questions certainly help move the process along. Being able to purchase the state filing with the software easy. I usually receive my refunds within 1-2 weeks, using the electronic filing capability. The only issue is when changes have been made from the IRS/government, it is more difficult to understand where and why additional forms from within the software are needed and why. For example, I had to look up on the IRS website to understand the where and why, as there was not enough information provided within the H&R software. Still I plan to utilize the program again next year!

I have used the software for several years and usually been very satisfied. The 2025 version, however, had a problem that was aggravating and was not corrected after I reported it.
In entering a group of bond sales, you should be able to enter VAR (for various) in the CUSIP number field. The software demanded a numeric value. I reported the problem to the help line, and was told to install the next update and maybe it would be corrected. I installed two subsequent updates, but the problem was not corrected. The 2024 version accepted VAR in the field; also, CUSIP numbers often include alphabetic characters, so even if I had listed multiple sales individually, several would not have been accepted.
It’s upsetting when an updated version of software has problems not in earlier ones.
Pros: Easy to prepare

Where to start? After completing the federal return, I downloaded the Virginia return. It would not work. I called your help desk and they were not able to solve the problem. They suggested I reloaded. After reloading Virginia I discovered that the federal return had gotten erased. That was enough for me to ditch the software.

I used the software for 2025 returns. Pure garbage. The Feds refused my return for incorrect entries in a section of a form that I didn't have any entries in. there must have been zeros entered by Block that shouldn't have been there. I looked for help on the Block website. Wasn't any!
