I have been using H&R Block software for years because it is low priced and the program works well.
However, I almost made a big mistake with the 2025 return, and I went back to find that the same mistake was made for the 2024 return. First, I manually enter my 1099-DIV from my two Fidelity Investment accounts. Later on in the Interview, I had to enter in the 1099-B information, which is sale of stock, etc. Since this is a large number of shares traded, I tried importing the 1099-B data. It worked!
This year for error checking, I decided to go through the interview again and I discovered two sets of 1099-DIV's. The second set had an exclamation point listed by the items, and this second set was added into the total, which resulted in a significant increase in tax.
Here is what I found. When I downloaded the Fidelity "Consolidated 1099-Form," the tax software grabbed the 1099-DIV data out of there and plugged it into the same category which I had previously entered. It also plugged in the 1,230 entries from the sale of stock, etc. Unfortunately for last year, my error checking didn't catch the double entry. In the software, the last thing done is error checking, and it identified 1,246 data verifications. I gave up on going through all that because all I saw where those small stock sales.
I know what to do for the amended return and for future returns. I think I'll import the consolidated 1099 file first! It would be nice if the tax software was made "smart enough" to not do the double entry.
