Unexpected Issue with state return E-Filing

This is my 8th year with HRB. 7 smooth successful years. BUT this year HRB software could not handle my wife's passing last year for my STATE return. Hence could not E-File my state return. The HRB instructions for mailing my state return did NOT mention 1099-R's so I did not include them. I now suspect this is another issue with HRB software
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents
Cons: Time consuming

The interface remains to be low tech. Lessons need to be taken from TurboTax. Navigation, printing, saving files leave much to be desired. No improvement in these areas over last year.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents

Been using the software for years and think it's a slightly better value than the competition. The reason I give it only 3 stars is because it does not import 1099 forms from Fidelity. Entering them by hand is tedious and error-prone, which are the main problems I'm trying to avoid by using the software.
