I bought the Fed + State package on line. The vendor offered a hard disc to be shipped. A day or so after the purchase, the vendor claimed shipping problems but said the software could be downloaded. The software worked fine but I believe the offer was an intentional misrepresentation. Filing on one return was delayed by a "gateway" problem.
I think it's time to switch to other tax prep apps. Found that there are people out there getting cheaper / free software (not the free version, but full deluxe version) and I was not able to get refund
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund

I have been using H&R Block software for a long time now. However, these last two years, I have had issues with my energy form. The default form that came up for my continuation of my benefits required me to override boxes that the software said I couldn’t override. Because it was already the 15th I had to leave the box as is and hope that I’m not audited. The default box checked that my solar was a result of new construction and I could not change it. My energy is not due to new home construction. I added energy to an existing home.
For prior year energy, I was not able to e-file my state return because H&R Block software told me I needed to download forms for Arizona and mail in my return.
My sister is using another competitor product and did not have any issue with her energy form, as she also got solar. Also, for the previous year, her form was included in her state return and she was able to e-file with forms included in her software. With H&R Block, I had to manually download and update the form - not knowing what goes in the boxes - and mail in my Arizona return.
I traveled for many years for work and had to do multiple state tax returns. Many of them with manual instructions where to download forms. The competitor includes these forms in their software so they can be entered in the application and printed for mailing.
I really wanted to continue supporting this product and have for many years, but it’s falling short in some areas. I asked my sister for a copy of her tax return so I would know what to put in the boxes.
Cons: Hard to prepare

Had multiple issues with the app this year. First is the frustrating warning for minimum distributions even if it doesn't apply to you. The second was the submission issue on the last 2 days for filing, multiple charges to the credit card.
Pros: Easy to import documents, Fast

Major e-Filing problems on April 14/15

I've been a user of this tax software for about 5 years, and in the past have been pleased. The software is easy to use, figures out the taxes correctly, and is reasonably priced. This year, 2024 was another story. Trying to e-File on the night of April 14 and for most of the day on the 15th, e-Filing failed with an error reading "Bad gateway". Thousands of people were reporting this issue on Facebook, Reddit, Twitter. Worst part was- I feel like Block wasn't very transparent about the problem. They suggested "try again in an hour" or "print it out and mail it". I finally got it printed out at 3pm on the 15th, but I don't think I want to go through an issue like this again in future years. I'm rating it 3 stars since it worked well for many years, but this year I'd rate it 1.

I have been using the software application for decades, since before it was H&R Block. If has been reliable from year to year, with understandable & logical steps to complete our tax returns. H&R Block has improved both the application and the available support. Very, very, pleased.
