Not very confident In the technology of transmitting the return. H&R Block server down for at least 12 hours the day before taxes were due.

I've been using HRBlock tax prep software every year since I switched from filling in a 1040A by hand. It gets easier every year, even though each new year brings a new quirk to my situation. It gets me through tax season. It even handles the ins and outs of coordinating state with federal. It still takes time to assemble all the input documents, but that applies to any tax prep method. This year I could import my W2 from a pdf. That saved time and typos!
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents

I tried to file my tax return on Sunday April 14th for several hours and again on April 15th until it was finally accepted on the afternoon of April 15th. Extremely stressful only to be topped off by being charged for my 1 and only State filing. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!

Awkward to use, especially when you dig up a 1099
on April 19, 2024

It's not super painful to use, but adding in additional data late in the process is actually super awkward. Like, you finally dig up a 1099 that you couldn't find before. You can't just tell the software you have a new 1099; you have to figure out which part of which interview to re-run.
Cons: Hard to import documents

Assessment of 2023 HR Block Tax Software Package

I have used HR Block tax software for several years. The software for this year seemed to be "dumbed down" compared to previous years. While this may have helped speed up the process in many instances, it prevented the user from dealing with intricate issues in some other instances. In my case, I was able to fix one issue that prevented my electronic Federal tax submission from initially being accepted. However, I was not able to get thru the boiler plate to remedy a problem that prevented my electronic California state submission from being accepted. In the end I had to print out that submission and mail it.
Pros: Fast
Cons: Time consuming
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
