I am a long time H & R block user and I always normally file early, Feb or March every year and never have had any issues. I don't mind paying the extra money that this costs for the piece of mind that it gives me....however this year I forgot until the actual tax day deadline to hit submit on my return...and it was a big mistake because the H & R block server issue that happened caused me to lose a half of day of productivity at work, the software status update was saying that it knew there was an issue but for me to keep trying to submit it. After 3 times of clicking submit and getting an authorization hold for the payment on my bank account....I stopped and thought that I would be in trouble with the IRS and was very worried about this. Finally at 7 pm I was cleared to submit the return, thank God! However, the lost productivity and then the authorization holds on my bank account for 5 days for almost 70 dollars...will probably make me think twice about continuing to use this software in the future. I don't like change, so good chance I will forget by next year, but this was very painful and I lost productivity, and there are more reliable and frankly cheaper options that have been recommended to me.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents
You refused my comment just before tax day.. I don't remember it exactly, but you refused to let me file a MA extension online & wouldn't give an explanation. WHY?

I have had good luck with H&RB software in the past, though more complex situations often need more explanations. This year when I tried to file my daughter's taxes the H&RB server seems to have been down. This problem persisted for from the evening through the next days morning until we had to leave for DC. This resulted in my having to take my laptop to DC, through two sets of security screenings, and all over DC where we were walking. I had already filed my taxes successfully at home and have checked status since we retuned without making changes, so the problem is definitely on H&RB's end. With the repeated attempts to file for my daughter, I now have extra charges still processing on my credit card account, and if they go through I have been overcharged so the issues are still ongoing many days later.
Cons: Time consuming
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Have always had a very positive exp with the Block. The only issue I have ever had was the night before the tax deadline when they lost their severer connection for about 20 hours. Couldn't efile a darn thing. On the afternoon of the 15th the server connection returned so I was good.
The processing snafu of April 15th is a deal break

I've used Kiplinger's/H&R Block for over 25 years. I've never experienced an issue like Monday, April 15th's transmission problems. The biggest problem was lack of transparency both on the initial error side and then on the credit card charge side and then on the resolution. It is so disappointing to see a great partner drop this big of a core piece of it's functionality.
