Been using H&R Block tax software for quite a few years now and it is relatively easy to use. The U.S. Tax Code is very complicated and HR Block addresses issues in layman's terms.

I tried to do my Fed and State (MA) tax returns using their respective on-line free filing methods just as I did last year, but when attempting to file my Fed return, I could not get past their required security feature. However I did complete my MA return and filed it. Unfortunately, I later found that I had made an error and needed to send an amended return. Because I had a unique 1099R that caused my MA error. I purchased and downloaded your Premium Fed & State tax software. (In the past, I used your Basic software to file my Fed return, and the data it created to complete a free on-line MA return. The IRS did accept my Fed return that you sent-in, but even though I was able to generate my MA state return, I could not finish and file it because your software will not do an amended return unless the initial return was processed with your software. That said, I did try to use your data to amended my MA return. However, your mathematical protocol differs from the way MA wants their return processed, and this resulted in me paying $178.00 more that what your software said I needed to pay. Too bad you will not accept a download of my original MA filing so you could do my amended return!
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to import documents

I have used this software for 10 years. It's good. I don't like paying for each state return. It makes the software expensive if you use it for 5 people

Most of the features work well. However, when my father used the MO residency page the last two year, the MO treasury called asking for more money. The reason, there are number of fields on that form that are not passing to MO, so it looks like you owe more tax. My father this year just mailed it instead of efiling.

It was easy to use and I got a quick refund. I used to use TurboTax a few years ago and I switched when TuboTax raised their prices. H&R Block software accepted the TurboTax data from the previous year and the software made the switchover reasonably painless.
H&R software tends to add updates during Jan/Feb so I wait until March to do my taxes, figuring all the last minute updates are done.
