I have been using H & R Block stpftware for over fifteen years.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast

Long time customer but 2023 was not a good year for the software. EV Tax forms not ready until 3/22/24
Cons: Time consuming

Very unhappy

I have been using this for years and has been great but this year (2023 tax year) in the middle of doing my taxes I clicked on help and it said "no internet" and could not load help even though the internet was working fine I tried all the suggestions, disabling firewall, dns settings, etc could not get anything to load so had to complete my taxes without help menus, I had to search on google for answers to my questions. which was more time consuming and inconvenient, I paid good money for this to guide me through complex taxes and did not get what I paid for. I am very disappointed.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Lazy software forced an error

Three things - 1) After I finished everything including importing some W2s and 1099-INT and 1099-DIV, it showed that there were three "Data Verification" items that needed to be checked - one of them was a Dividend box that was empty - so I entered the amount of dividends from the 1099-DIV. Only after I e-filed did I notice that it doubled my dividend income. Now I have to eat the taxes or, I guess, file an amended return. 2) It showed me that I'm at a "Slightly Elevated" audit risk then give me a complicated list of 6 items suggesting it was one of those items. Well, I know which item it was but so should the software...the software just tell me the one thing that caused the elevated risk. This is just lazy programming. 3) At one point, it dumped me back at the beginning of the income section. Okay, it's somewhat easy to click through 20-30 "Next" items but I'm too afraid to not read what I'm clicking on so this added a good bit of time to the entry process. Never Again H&R Block.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund

Excessive Accumulation

Whoever came up with the term "excessive accumulation" should be fired! It appears like the description for constipation rather the issue of insufficient RMD withdrawals from an IRA. Your software should be modified to describe this in layman's terms rather than your confusing verbiage. Additionally, when trying to access further information, I kept getting the message that I was not connected to the internet. I tried all the suggestion but to no avail. Never could get connected to further information.

Good software for tax returns

All the forms that I and my friends (whose taxes I volunteer to do for them) need are included here. K-1 on forms can get pretty messy and I never know if they are being done correctly. I like the two pages of lines for charitable giving

glaring and unnecessary bugs

There were at least three annoying issues encountered this year. The worst was that the software imported the WRONG AGI from the previous year (even though we used the same software last year), wouldn't let us manually fix it, and claimed that we were offline (we weren't) so it wouldn't let us access help files. Once we submitted the return (knowing it would be rejected), THEN it gave us instructions for how to fix it. It was infuriating! Don't make things harder than they need to be!
