H&R Block 2023 Review

This was the 2nd year I used your tax software. I was disappointed this year as I had to wait till now to file my return to get a refund because of forms not being ready. I never had to wait when using Turbo Tax in the past. I hope this was a exception year but if this is the norm now I will be returning to Turbo Tax
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Lost a long time customer

I’ve been purchasing HR block software for over 10 years. The quality has declined. This years software requires weekly updates only for the forms to not be ready in the expected date. I started in return in Jan, the EV form was expected 2/9. Then changed to 2/16, then 3/8, 3/14, 3/22. Week after week a date listed and isn’t met. We finally were able to “file” on 3/8 for the return to be rejected. Updating on 3/14 with another notice for 3/22 is the last straw for us. We filed with Trubotax received the same refund. Filed and accept same day. TurboTax now has a new loyal customer.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Forced me to purchase a new laptop!!!

This would not load to my laptop and the technical help desk did not have a solution. I am certain I am not the only person whose 2012 laptop was still working perfectly well. Why deliver a software that is not backward compatible? Must be some agreement between Intuit and Apple??? Since there is no other product out there - Intuit also owns Turbo Tax - I was forced into a new laptop. Horrible way to do business. Sorry but all good features are overridden by this horrible aspect of my experience. Don’t worry, your 2014 computers go next. I asked.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Hard to import documents

Works but has problems and H&R support is non exis

Been using this software for a number of years but this will be my last time. Online chat is worthless. They don't respond to emails to the contact us link. Had to wait three weeks for a form to be ready that the IRS told me was complete for over a month.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Why does an update cause it to crash?

As usual, had no problems using the software and entering our Federal and State tax information. Waited a month to make sure, and as expected, there was an update to the Federal software. Proceeded with the update and the program CRASHED! I tried "repairing" the software and that made no difference. Finally had to uninstall and reinstall and then the update succeeded (after forcing my PC to reboot). Yes, we got our Federal and State returns submitted today, but WHY the software drama on an update?
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast

Not a 100% happy

Could not e file my state taxes due to program issues within H&R software or system per H&R. Attempted three time following their instructions without success. Have use them for numerous years with some technical problem last year and now. Filing taxes is not a pleasant task but having to circumvent these issue and still having to file a paper returns leads me to consider other options.
Pros: Easy to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent but can't e-file Colorado State returns

I have used this product many years and have always rated it a 5. This year however, I have to lower the rating to a 4. Why? This year I was not able to e-file my Colorado State return because I had a child care credit donation. Note that other tax software products allow for filing and submitting the required Form 1317 via the internet. In fact, Colorado even set up a form submission routine for those who e-file that links the required form up with the submitted return. I don't understand why H&R Block has not built this into their software. I'm hoping you make this change by next year. If not, I may just have to go to Turbo Tax. Having to mail in my state return was especially troublesome because I also needed to mail in copies of all the IRS Form 1099s as well as receipts for donations (stuff that's already in the federal return I filled out or not required if I had been able to e-file). This was a lot of extra work since I had to make lots of copies for the submittal.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Easy to import documents, Fast
Cons: Time consuming
I would recommend this to a friend!
