As a software developer specializing in User Interface and User Experience design, I'm very impressed by the thoughtful design of this product. I can't say that filing tax returns is ever fun, but doing them this way is as slick and painless as I can imagine. My past returns carry over and feed into the current year as needed without any extra searching. My federal return flows over seamlessly into my Oregon state return with repeating any data entry. Most impressive is the fusion of sequential entry (for those who prefer to wait and do it all at once) with random-access entry (for those who prefer to add information as it arrives piecemeal throughout the year), or any combination of both. So slick. The first-rate design has kept me coming back year after year for a decade. Kudos!
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
My review gets a Five Star. I have used this Program for over forty years to file my Income Taxes. Thank you for your Tax Program.

Did not update for all the IRS and CA filing exceptions including deferred payment dates. Waited for update scheduled for April 14 which did not happen.
Pros: Maximizes refund
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I’ve been using H&R Block Deluxe for both Federal & State tax preparation since the early 2000s. It gets easier and more comprehensive every year. The questionnaire format provides a simple interface that guides one through the entire process and automatically completes only one’s required tax forms. Also, one can quite easily navigate to any section of questions or view any official tax form at any time during the process. If one is not sure of the answer(s) to specific questions or needs to research specific data, one can skip ahead, then easily return to that section at a later time. Tip: every new tax year, I’ll use the previous years’s software version to enter interim data so I can keep a rough estimate of my taxes as the year progresses. Then, I’ll switch to the latest version when it becomes available. This way, I can keep tabs on how much in estimated taxes to pay each Quarter, and shouldn’t be presented with any big surprises when I officially complete the current year’s taxes. We’ll worth the price as the tax software pays for itself multiple times over in both saving money and time.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
I have used the software for over 20 years. I would recommend a couple of changes. First off, for regular users, why not use the subscription model, where you pay a subscription price for the annual use of the software? Let's face it, the federal or state laws may change, but the software coding is not much different from year to year. A second suggestion, since you offer up to 5 free federal tax filings, why not extend the state to 2 or even 3 filings, particularly if it is for the same state. There are other products that offer a similar solution and at more competitive pricing. Why not shake things up a bit. : )
Pros: Easy to prepare
I would recommend this to a friend!

Software should ask more detail questions such as, You didn't enter your W-2, did you receive from 1099-R to avoid tax payer entering information for wages and salary
Pros: Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
Cons: Hard to prepare

The Best Tax Software Program

I have used HR Block and its predecessor, Tax Cut, for many years. It’s easy to use and follows a well-organized “interview” format. It also has a good system to jump back, when needed, to previous components you have finished, and you can view how the actual form will look. And it keeps a running total of your tax liability (or refund) status as you go through and input information—which is interesting or agonizing to watch, depending on whether you’re having to pay more taxes or getting a refund. Of course, it is important to have all your W2, 1099, and other information organized before you start the program. I probably should have my head examined for saying this, but the program almost makes doing your taxes fun, instead of an ordeal. It only takes me about 90 minutes to do federal and state returns.
