The federal part is spot on, but the KY state part always gives me fits because it won’t allow input of more than one federal and state pension stream, I have to enter it on the form. This is due to KYs complex methods to determine exemptions of state and federal pensions and the dates one receives them. The state part needs revamped to allow more than one pension and allow the input of purchased time and service credit. If I have to enter it directly on the form, I don’t need the software.
Program did the math fine, but for the THIRD YEAR RUNNING was unable to transmit my federal return electronically because of what has to be a coding error in the transmission segment. So I have to pay to mail it and wait longer for my return, a perhaps key point this year since I am putting my return in I-bonds, and the interest rate changes soon. Other pains: it does not do part-year or non-resident returns for my state (Vermont)--if you advertise that you do a state return, you should do it! It charges to file a state return electronically (same comment--that should be part of doing a return these days). I complained in writing twice about the submission problem regarding the Federal taxes this year alone, and did not get a reply either time. After at least 13 years of using this program, it sounds like it is time to look at Turbo Tax.
I have been using H & R Block since 2020 and each year it seems easier to maneuver through the program. I also had some questions and they provided a Tax Pro call back at a time convenient for me.
The program works well and does what it should for a relatively simple filing jointly federal, and NY state return. I like that all no additional purchases were needed to do these 2 returns electronically,
The only glitch that I found is when it does the error review, actual errors on my part were shown that I could fix with prompting, but it also comes up with and I paraphrase "data errors that should be looked at and will not prevent filing". The latter "errors" in a couple of cases could not be fixed and one that wanted my itemized deduction amount from last year was most annoying. This was because I didn't itemize last year or this year and I used the standard deduction, I imported last year's data from the H&R Block software so this year's instance should not ask for that info. So far so good, the returns were accepted payment accepted by Feds, and state refund was received.
