I bought the software because I sold a piece of property and needed help with the short term capital gain. I expected interview questions to see what was eligible to be deducted but there were none. I spent hours watching videos and reading articles to figure out what "adjusted basis" meant. I'm still not sure my return was correct but I'm sure IRS will let me know! I will not pay for H&R Block software again.
Federal tax software is excellent. Easy to follow and enter data. Same for the District of Columbia state tax software. Had no problems. The Virginia state software leave much to be desired if you are filing a part-year return. Very confusing. The software lacks the proper explanations for the items you need to enter. Maybe the Virginia full-year software is easier and makes more sense. I will find out next year.
As usual preparing my tax returns was easy peasy! If your income sources are almost the same as the year before, all you have to do is input the tax year numbers.
Great product with easy to answer questions. The answers get put into the correct forms for hassle-free filing. If it seems expensive to you, check out free filing options. For me it is a great value. And if it seems low cost, you've been paying an accountant too much!
I've been using this software for many years. It works. Please note that my taxes are simple and could be done by hand easily enough. The advantages are that the computer does the math and the software keeps up with the tax code. I don't have to borrow or buy Lassiter each year. The only disadvantage is retrieving previous years' results; once found, the report printouts are about ~125-150% scale. That means that the far right column (sometimes columns) can not be read. Of necessity, I keep paper copy, pdf's and the original software.
