Software works reasonably well for the federal return (3 star) but NOT for the Arizona state return (one star). This has caused me much aggravation with the state dept. of revenue.
It has misleading instructions for the state tax credit for donations to schools, which can cause one to miss the credit or if it does generate the credit, it fails to subtract the credit from deductions.
It also enters the wrong amount for exclusion of a federal pension and because of confusing instructions, it leads to double-counting of the Social Security equivalent of Railroad Retirement.
H&R Block tax software is so easy to use. I've used it for 9 years. Last year I sold my house and it was a lot easier than I expected to handle the tax end of it.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast
Excellent software, easy to navigate, updated Federal and State laws regarding deductions, donations, and exemptions, all the necessary worksheets needed and great quick tips.

The "tax computing" part of the software is great. I have no problem with that. The reason why I am giving it three stars, and likely switching to different software next year, is the dated interface. For example, there's no way to change the size of the text, making the text while doing the interview and entering data difficult to read. I have a huge monitor but the interface takes up a tiny portion of the screen, and uses small font sizes to boot. Not sure why that isn't user adjustable. My other problem with this software is the lack of a "community." It seems like with TurboTax there are hosted online forums, for example, that allow you to ask tax questions or ask how to enter pieces of data to make the data "work" with the software and the tax forms. H&R Block lacks that feature, in an attempt I assume, to get you to pay for the use of one of their tax advisors. I've been saying for the past few years I'm going to give a different piece of software a try, and after this year and seeing no changes to the H&R software, I think I will.
Antiquated software that was inflexible and did not have common edge cases e.g. married filing separately with dependent care expenses. Oh and couldn't link to Schwab until way too close to the filing deadline.
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
