So Many Clumsy Flaws Anymore
on April 6, 2025

TurboTax has had at least one serious flaw for years, and finally it's become so egregious that I have to say something...again! In topics that may be "less common" it asks me for information that it should be able to look up. It has direct access to 25 years of TurboTax returns on my hard drive and can pull information from them easily, but in so many critical moments it asks me whether I had any residual this or previously disallowed that, during the last N years...or it asks me what my depreciation was for something that it should easily be able to find. It's VERY aggravating because I must spend hours all-told looking through dozens of old returns and very often come up empty. I don't know the form phrases to look for, or the forms or worksheets to look in. But TurboTax should. I ALWAYS keep all worksheets, so TurboTax should be able to find that info.
I also greatly dislike how TurboTax started out from the beginning of my return this year factoring in a big estimated tax payment penalty and only after I went to HUGE lengths over DAYS of time working needlessly through several layers of annualization data-gathering and calculation, and then another exercise that asked me if I wanted to assume that a withholding date is the same as a paying date (which it ALWAYS is...duh)...only after days and days of that did your program admit to me that I could just request a penalty waiver if I had retired the year before. Your program was doing everything it could to HIDE that from me until the end! It's almost as if TurboTax didn't want me to find that part of the return. So WHO IS TURBOTAX WORKING FOR??? WHOSE PRIORITIES IS TURBOTAX TRYING TO OPTIMIZE/MAXIMIZE??? I thought it was me, but that experience has convinced me otherwise. I think it may be time to try a different product.
Also, TurboTax is MONTHS late on finalizing some forms. That's inexcusable. I've been working on this return since late January and now it's a week into April...and finally your product says "new updates available tody" and is "willing to finalize and print the return." Really pathetic...and please don't blame the government; you can give me a warning that some form is late and prelim, but you NEVER have the right to prevent me from printing the return and taking my chances on filing it.
Finally, this is the first time I used the MacBook Pro version of TurboTax. After EVERY SINGLE CLICK it takes 30 full seconds of "thinking" before I get to see the next "EasyPage" and select the next button. I have spent hours every day for 2.5 months because it's just sooooo slow. Don't blame my computer; it's late model, a Gig of RAM, huge empty disk space, and everything else is blazing fast. Does your product perhaps assume you're not acceessing an external drive? You shouldn't assume that; you should be able to access any mounted drive with reasonable speed. Again, every other program including RAM-intensive and HDD-intensive products run fast and fine. Yours? Slower than molasses.
(Also your "print your return" page is awkward; let "print to PDF" be one of the printer selections. As it is, the letters "PDF" appear at the bottom but they don't mean anything until I click them...and then and onlyy then does the program ignore the selected printer. Clumsy...not intuitive at all. No other software package does it that way. We should select a printer from the list of mapped printers or...and right there in the same printer list there should be a "print to PDF" phrase...like the rest of the world does it.)
Pros: My employment status changed this year

Well-do Federal, State program just basic

Federal program is good. State program needs help, (Nebraska). For the state return, if one didn't know about the community college property tax credit, and Special Capital Gains/Extraordinary Dividend Election and Computation adjustment - one would never figure those out using turbo tax.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

OK but more issues than last year
on April 6, 2025

Seemed like there were more glitches this year than in past years. Also, the process for entering multiple entries where I had to enter the cost basis and initial trade date for government mortgage securities that pay back principal each month is very clunky -- seems like there has to be an easier way to do it.

Program performance was poor, challenging to use
on April 6, 2025

Turbotax 2024 was terrible to use. I have been using the program to prepare my taxes since 2001, and this latest version was by far the worst. The program was more cumbersome to use and did an overall poor job o transmitting forms for my W2 and brokerage accounts. I had to spend far more time manually inputting the data then double checking the results and calculations. It duplicated entries and made far more mistakes than I have ever seen. I also, due the way the program is set up, perhaps for the Macintosh, it proved to be an absolute drain on my PC taking up 8 GB of memory alone to run. Why?
Pros: I bought or sold investments
