Two problems encountered with EasyStep
on April 5, 2025

In preparing my federal return, I encountered a difficulty involving a distribution from an IRA where half of it was taxable and half was a qualified charitable distribution. No matter what I did, EasyStep would not properly allocate the distribution into a taxable portion and a non taxable portion. To resolve this I had to go into Forms, open the relevant 1099-R and in the bottom half of the form check the box ""Recipient, but was originally inherited from a spouse."
I had paid estimated taxes to my state of residence, Pennsylvania. In preparing my Pennsylvania return, I found no way under EasyStep to enter estimated taxes paid. I had to go into Forms and manually add my estimated taxes.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I had some difficulty navigating TurboTax, but experts were able to help. In the end everything worked out. The tax expert was Knowledgeable and helped enormously.

Not awesome but not horrible either

Can be confusing and should have had an 'Update Turbotax' tab in the menu instead of rejecting the sending of the e-file along with all those stupid 'Update Now' messages with no obvious way to achieve it

TT struggles to be relevant or useful
on April 5, 2025

Eventually gets the job done, I guess. So many confusing prompts with little to no context, especially during error check. Can't tell you the number of times it legitmately said "need a value in this field" and the field has no label (or is just something like "line 17") and the title of the error doesn't name an institution, tax form, or anything to help you figure out wtf it's talking about.
If you have a very vanilla tax filing, it's OK. Beyond that, it's garbage.
I imported documents from some institutions where I ended up with let's say 4 copies of a 1099 combo doc. When entering info, TT only says "what is the value on line 4 of your 1099 from <institution>?" with no way to discern which of the accounts at the institution it is referring to. Minimally — and I mean minimally — they should always allow you to see the imported document that is triggering the error they want you to fix.
Don't get me started on the final steps for filing. Filled in our names and the current date at least 3 times … why? And right before e-filing, it suddenly found another "error" on the state portion. But we had run the state check several times and it said everything was good.
It never really knows where you are. When you re-launch the app it says "continue?" and then clicking that takes you to vaguely the same AREA you were in, but the specific form you were on. Why?
There were also some cases where it asked me to fill in numbers — very important, critical numbers — that IT KNOWS! Why make me fill that in? You know better than I do, but now you want me to manually go through all 17 of my 1099s and calculate some total that you should very easily be able to do? Good grief.

It was easier than last year, in my experience. It took less time.
