Better than pencil and paper.

It seems Turbo Tax hasn't changed much in the last few years. There are still a few areas that are cumbersome, like Foreign Tax Credit when I have numerous investments from multiple brokerages that pay foreign taxes.
Also, Federal agency and treasury interest and dividends that are exempt from MN taxes. This may be an issue at Charles Schwab, but it would be nice to be able to delineate ETF dividends and agency interest that isn't downloaded from Schwab while doing the federal return.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TurboTax makes doing income tax easy

CA 540 (EasyStep) could be more automated; specifically, Cap Gains Carryover could have automatically pulled figures from referenced Federal 1040 and done calculations on CA540 Cap Gains worksheet.
Also, would be nice if TurboTax could pull "Income from Government Securities" from info provided by my brokerages (-- instead of having to download info as PDFs from my brokerages, then manually look up and calculate percentage of income derived from Govt Securities for relevent mutual funds).
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Go back to CDs for loading.

I did not like the non-CD loading process. Everyone I spoke to about the loading process agrees. Please go back to using CDs to load the software. Also, the program bogged down too many times during use.

<pre Buggie than before.

Desktop application always seems to have at least one bug each year.
The headache of troubleshooting the bug knocks your product down to a 3 start rating.
Prior to 2021 the turbotax desktop program never had any issues.
Pros: My employment status changed this year, I bought or sold investments

Dowload Issues and e-file issues for state
on April 1, 2025

Problems with state downloads and e-filing state returns ... but no problem if it was taken out of my refund. Only if I wanted to use my credit card and save the $40 fee.
Why is that?

TurboTax gets better every year!

As in the past, the interview process worked very well. This process allows the completion of the return, worksheets, etc., with minimal pain and disruption. The review process is painless, and often fixes simple typo mistakes, as well as forces thought and confirmation of the data.

Why do we still need tax software, this is insane.

TurboTax 2024 is 95% exact same code as I paid for when I bought TurboTax 2023. The 5% difference this year is the absolutely god-awful UI for managing editing 1099's. Every year there's some dumb new thing bolted onto the decades-old parts of the program, and at this point it's just a huge mess.
