TurboTax Fails Import Function
on March 23, 2025
Posted by: Oilz
Big disappointment as the import function did not work regardless of troubleshooting or support. The program did not recognize I was online even when I was online. This created a big inconvenience and meant I had to enter my information manually. I am now considering an alternative for next tax season after using TurboTax for over 15 years.

Turbotax is a mess with foreign tax credit.

Foreign tax credit section is awful with taxes from a few foreign countries. I have to break up 3 1099-div into 10 1099-div's with some countries appearing in more than 1 1099-div. Turbotax does not seem to know what to do after 3 countries. Cannot find all the 1099-divs. Took me 6 hours, finally I had to manually edit the 1116 forms!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TTAX getting buggier

there were a number of bugs and wasted time researching them, deleting and reentering data - several times - before you issued a working update

Upgrade to Premier fell short of expectations
on March 23, 2025

My husband has had stock options that vested over the past few years, and we have had more transactions to record. Because of that, I upgraded from TurboTax Deluxe to Premier, but I'm not sure it was worth it. The software told me that California differs from federal rules in how it handles capital loss carryovers, but it didn't help explain those differences to me or help me know whether they applied to our case. I ended up Googling the information and going through the state guidelines myself. We also got a 1099-Q because we used our 529 to pay for our daughter's college tuition (our first year doing this). Payments were sent directly to the university, so the form was sent to our daughter. We actually didn't need to report it because 100% of the expenses were used for tuition, room and board, but when I first added it, TurboTax didn't tell me that. It also told me that my daughter might need to pay taxes, which I'm pretty sure is wrong (there were no other sources of income to report, so there's no reason why my daughter would need to pay taxes on 529 funds that were used for qualified education expenses. After Googling this and calling the 529 customer service line, I learned that we didn't need to include the 1099-Q at all, which is something I would've expected TurboTax to tell me. (By the way, the Live tax expert service has bad reviews, which is why I didn't bother. I didn't want to throw good money after bad.)
