2024 Turbo Tax is a Disaster.

I have used Turbo Tax to prepare our tax return for over 10 years. Turbo Tax 2024 used a new format for entering 1099 forms that I found extremely maddening. In previous years I could enter our 3 brokerage accounts and assign them a name. When entering data or reviewing data I could tell which 1099 I was working from and the data input went very smoothly.
This year the data entry format seemed to be aligned around the sections of the 1099, Interest, Dividends, Proceeds from Brokerage Transactions, etc. I found this maddening because I could never determine which 1099 I was entering data for.
Next year I will be using a paid tax preparer.

You Can Get Your Taxes Done but Still Mediocre
on March 17, 2025

Works for getting my taxes finished. However, every year has less and less useful help. Almost any tricky area is easiest done by reviewing the IRS instructions and Google searching then just typing into the form. The "help" is usually worthless. The focus of Intuit is clearly "up selling" vs making a great product.

Turbo Tax is awesome.

It is very easy to amend filed returns. The 1040X was filed and the correct 1040 was generated automatically.

Good but was better before.

Presentation of dividends and interest downloads from banks and brokerages is not clear. Had to go to forms to check accuracy of data downloaded.

TurboTax has some major flaws.
on March 17, 2025

TurboTax has some major flaws that have been reported for years, but not yet addressed.
1. When you finish entering your data and go back through to review your input, TurboTax "forgets" the answers you have entered. It remembers the numbers entered but not the answers to the multiple choice questions, thus all these decisions have to be made again. This is RIDICULOUS. Once I make a choice, TurboTax should keep it in memory unless I decide to change it.
2. TurboTax wants to extort $25 from you for a state e-file, so they make it as difficult as possible to print the state forms for paper filing. Every year I spend hours fighting TurboTax to find a way to print my state forms for paper filing. This year, there is actually a link that purports to let you print the state form -- but the link doesn't work. I'm still trying to print my state form.
A new problem this year is the revised formatting of the brokerage form entry pages. It is much more confusing than in the past and doesn't allow you to complete one brokerage form and then move on to another. Also, once you have entered a form, it is very difficult to tell which of your forms you are working on.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo Tax is functional

The addition of picture does nothing but add confusion to me - an older user - who knows how to read and doesn't need the addition of deciphering a picture to figure out what I'm supposed to input next. Or which picture to follow. I will be looking into other tax software next year I have to use pictures again to complete my tax docs.

Love Turbo Tax. Easy to use step by step instructions to be sure all is covered. Easy to go back and review or edit. Easy to dive deeper in the worksheets to understand how things are calculated.
