turbo tax makes filing less painful

Generally, I like Turbo Tax, but Turbo Tax needs to eliminate the additional charge to electronically file state tax returns.

A Great Program, BUT -

The program worked well enough, but I spent 2 hours reading articles and instructions and anything I could find to determine whether pensions from foreign companies should be categorized as passive income or general income on Form 1116. This is the first year I have had that income to report. he IRS publications and Turbo tax only referred to Lump Sum distributions of pension funds - no help at all. I finally found the information I needed ( FYI, it is General Category Income), but only by reading an online post by someone else who had struggled with the same issue. It would be so simple to just to state that in plain language. All Turbotax provided was the statement from the IRS publication, and I can read that myself. More seriously is the fact that Turbotax Premier desktop for my Mac refuses to print my returns for my records in the normal way.The printer menu never appeared on numerous attempts. I finally went to FORMS view and on FILE dropdown menu on the upper left of the desktop screen, I clicked on SAVE TO PDF, and it worked.

I've been using TTax for years, product is very good and the e-filing is efficient, but you have to know what you are doing on Joint accounts. One star deducted, when I download 1099s from Fidelity, my wife and I have a joint account so I have to down load from my userid and then from her userid since some accounts appear just under hers. TTax duplicated the common accounts causing taxes owed to be in error. I had to go in and delete the duplicates.

Turbo Tax took a step backward this year

A little disappointed. I have used Turbo Tax for many years. This year there was quite a lot on information that did not import properly and I had to spend almost as much time reviewing and correcting as it would have been just to add it myself. Never had that happen in the past. This also applies to the state return with information from my federal return. Very frustrating. I will have to think very hard before settling on a tax software next filing year.
