Turbo Tax is best overall

Still easiest tax software for me as I've been using it for many years. More manual import than previous years. Price getting too high.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Didn't like GUI changes
on March 9, 2025

The changes made to the GUI for Federal the Taxes>Wages & Income>Interest & Dividends home page made navigation, entry and review very difficult in my opinion. Being able to see the summaries for each financial institution on 1 page was much better in my opinion.

TurboTAX

TurboTax is a solid program that I have utilized since it was introduced many years ago. The disappointment is the FEES that are being charged are not warranted and make you revisit why you are such a LOYAL CUSTOMER?!

Quality on the decline
on March 9, 2025

I have been a TurboTax user for well over ten years, or longer, and felt the quality of the software was on decline in recent years. Here are some issues I encountered for the 2024 version:
1. None of the two W-2 forms would download and I had to type them in manually.
2. The state of Washington does not require filing tax returns, but TurboTax kept routing me back to file the state return. Frustrated I had to tell it to file the federal return first and come back for the state filing, which has no way to complete.
3. A worksheet popped up at the end of the Review session, asking fro some, but not all, information on electronic deposits/withdrawls. Then same questions plus more were asked for the same purpose in the File session. I'd hope you be more considerate for the users' time, by not redirect people to loop around for unrelated questions.

Not happy!

Not as good as it used to be! Tells us to do things that we do not know. Tells us things like " go to page 2?" What? Where? Also assumes that we know much without telling us where to get the information, or put in a form ... if you need it", I don't know if I need it? Seems this time that all you want is for us to go to your professional to extract more money from us. Didn't enjoy using this, this time. Sorry!

TurboTax works great (but found a potential bug)
on March 9, 2025

Works well. Mostly painless as long as you have all your forms and information ready and handy. Had an issue with reporting foreign taxes paid to multiple countries as it would let you list two or more and when you go to enter the amount for one and go do the second one (and I assume third and fourth, as well), the second country is no longer listed. If you list the second country and input that amount, the previous entry for the first country was no retained. That appears to be a major bug that might not affect many but it is problematic, nonetheless.

Is there something better?

When I purchased, I felt l was misled into believing the state tax efile was included for free like the federal was. It took three tries to download my information from Vanguard. I know the authentication is a plus, but I don't like the one that Turbo Tax uses.

Needs better QA and more attention to work flow

I have been using the desktop product for about 20yrs. In the last few years, I am finding it more difficult to:
() Navigate through steps in the guided mode. For instance, getting back to the section dealing with assigning of earnings and withholdings to my spouse (MFS) is cumbersome to the point of making written notes about how to do it.
() Making changes to 1099 imported documents is difficult or impossible. After struggling, help (somewhere) guided me to delete the imported version and create one manually. Even in this step, I was frustrated with the difficulty in creating 12x 1099-B lines this way -- I really wanted to able to enter everything directly on the table which I was able to see at some point. There are bugs in this code, also, when trying to bulk edit some of the information -- I continued to see "needs review" until I managed each change individually.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
