You're buying it because you don't have much choic

Let's be honest, we buy it because we have to, and we only use it because we have always used it. The product hasn't changed in years and the only reason that we have to buy it at all is because of tax preparation lobbying in Washington DC. This is a 'I have to buy this' piece of software every year.

Estimated Voucher Use
on February 16, 2025

Good experience overall. However, I would have liked to give a 5 star review but the return lacked explicit information concerning Estimated Payments and vouchers. It was noted on the vouchers for 2025 "Do Not File", however, the instructions indicated that they are to be used to prepay my taxes. So, it was confusing as to why the vouchers themselves indicated do not file when the instructions said use them to file.

Really need to fix some items to prevent overpaying and get large language model AI integration. HSA box 12 funding should not default as income EVER. Also, virginia state was defaulting to showing a tax due penalty because basic information from 2023 return was not populated by default and required manual entry. Numerous recapcha error issues when importing 1099 data from brokers.

Disappointing programming decisions and glitches

Turbotax interacts poorly with the Finder on Macs. It doesn't allow you to select which folder you want to save the returns in, but forces you to save only in folders that are listed in your sidebar. I've never seen this restriction in any other application. It also offers annoying screens such as the suggestion that a decedent could save in the future by arranging some sort of retirement account. The program should branch away from such an offering when it has already been told the taxpayer is deceased. TT also insists that a date of death prior to the tax year is an error. Sometimes account belonging to the decedent continue to earn money the following year, and this is reported to their tax ID and may involve withholding that needs to be recovered as a refund. A program of this maturity, with this degree of monopoly pricing power, ought not to make mistakes like that.

Turbo Tax is expensive

The software is ok but you don't even provide instructions for people who are efiling on what, if anything, needs to be sent. Some people need this direction. For the price of your software, you should provide. I believe H&R Block does.

Overall a pretty easy process

Overall the program walked me through just about everything I needed to do to complete my taxes. Pretty upsetting on not getting through to the cloud at the end to process my return. System kept saying unable to access the cloud and making me reenter my sign on info which I knew was correct.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
