Toaster doesn't work right

Are the bread slices opposite sides? Wire connect on same side. I think it's not right. Burnt on bottom one side. Not done the other. Christmas gift

Initial use had good results

Nice shape format. Fits well next to My microwave. I used four coasters from the dollar store underneath it as suggested. It tastes evenly on both regular and thin sliced bread. I think it will take a little while to figure out the exact settings needed. It's fast enough and I am very pleased with it. So far. Would recommend.
