Producing a lot of smoke

The waffle makers worked well the first time but then afterwards began to produce a lot of smoke.

I wish the lock was a little easier to use, and if it had a better handle to flip the waffle maker.
It would also help if it had a drip pan. Gets the job done and it’s a very aesthetically pleasing appliance.
