Must have for your sanity

I've spent decades on the old school trainers and was in torture after about only 40 minutes.
Since then, I've upgraded to the Tacx Neo 3M and just recently the Tacx Alpine. The Alpine, along with the Neo3, is a game changer, and is probably as close to 3D movement as you can get. I'm using the Tacx training videos that come with Garmin and the Incline follows the climbs and descents very well. When climbing a grade, it's nice to have the feedback of the bike actually raising as if you are really climbing a 10% grade. Likewise, on the descents, the bike will move below grade to give the feeling of downhill.
The other cool thing is when you are moving at a good speed, if there are undulations on the course, you can feel the Incline moving quickly up and down in real time, as if you were really riding on a road.
Add in the Neo3 like I have, after you've finished climbing a grade and you need to recover on the downhill, the Neo3 simulates the free wheel, and your virtual speed will actually increase because you are going down hill. I definitely can spend much more time now on the trainer, mainly because of the movement from the Neo3 and Alpine.

Great Training Adjunct but Pricey

I received the Tacx Alpine as a Christmas gift. It is paired with my Tacx Neo 2T with motion plates. I use it primarily on Zwift and it truly does give an enhanced reality to the ride. The steering works well when needed. I like having it. It is just a little pricey but probably worth it.

Alpine

The Tacx Alpine is bombproof—no wobbling even when I’m hammering out-of-the-saddle sprints like I’m attacking a 15% incline. It’s dead quiet (huge bonus for not waking the house), super stable, and the gradient shifts hit up to 3% per second with crazy 0.1% accuracy. Response is instant—no lag that kills the flow. If you’re sick of that shaky, delayed feeling on other units, this fixes it completely.
• It makes indoor rides actually fun again (not just a chore) — Seriously, Fred, once you feel those real elevation changes lifting the front end, everything clicks. Pacing becomes intuitive—you anticipate the climb, shift gears naturally, stand up when it steepens, and adjust your position without thinking about it. Long rides (2+ hours) feel way more comfortable and less monotonous. It’s magic for free rides, virtual group races, or just exploring scenic routes on Zwift/Rouvy/Fulgaz—those “oh wow, this actually feels like real hills” moments keep me coming back. Structured ERG workouts? They work fine, but this thing shines when you want immersion over pure intervals.
• It solves all the annoying stuff the others have (plus some cool bonuses) — Reviewers (and my own experience) keep pointing out how it nails the common gripes: no more unstable base, limited range, noisy motors, or fiddly setup. Calibration is straightforward, and it stays planted. Best part? It throws in interactive steering with compatible apps, which adds another layer of realism—like actually leaning into corners on descents. If you’re upgrading from an older gradient sim or debating between the big names, this one feels like the one that finally got it right without compromises.

Added interesting for indoor cycling.

I've only had it a few weeks and using it with Tacx movies. The added dimension for indoor riding is nice and less boring. You can feel the shift in your weight as you ascend and descend hills. Being out of the saddle on climbs with the bike in an incline feels less awkward than without the Alpine. It is smooth and quiet in operation and quickly responds to changes. Some of the quick changing elevations such as small humps can have an odd sensation between the visual and elevation change but nothing uncomfortable. It did take a bit of self-negotiating to flip out the cash for it. I think the added dimension to the indoor ride was worth the cost.

Garmin has outdone themselves. the setup process was extremely quick and simple
This unit provides full immersion and feedback to rides with every possible axis of movement now. Steering is limited on zwift but appreciated nonetheless.
