Galaxy Z Fold 7 Review

I previously owned the Galaxy Z Fold4 and was very satisfied with it. The balance between hardware and software felt respectful of the user, and I never felt like the device worked against me. With the Galaxy Z Fold 7, that experience has changed. While the hardware remains outstanding, the software environment is now deeply integrated with Google services in ways that feel intrusive rather than helpful. System level Google components cannot be fully removed or disabled, and overlapping Samsung and Google apps introduce unnecessary redundancy and complexity. More concerning is the persistent background behavior tied to voice and assistant services. Voice prompts and assistant activations appear even when not intentionally engaged, which creates a continual perception that the device remains active beyond direct user interaction. Whether intentional or not, this behavior erodes trust and makes it difficult to feel confident that privacy is fully respected both during use and while the phone is idle. Because of this shift, I have decided to move away from this device and actively seek a phone that is not tightly controlled by Google at the operating system level. This is not a rejection of Samsung’s hardware, which continues to lead in innovation, but for a device at this price point users should have meaningful control over their software environment and confidence that background services are not undermining their privacy. If you are fully invested in Google’s ecosystem this phone may feel seamless, but if you value autonomy, minimalism, and privacy this tradeoff deserves serious consideration before purchasing.

Shorten screen timeout by navigating to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and selecting a shorter duration. To prevent accidental touches, enable Accidental touch protection in Settings > Display.
