Great Table Radio

The Tivoli Model One Has great FM reception, even for weak stations. The controls are few, simple to operate, and feel good to the hand. We are planning to get another one.

Simple, excellent audio

I won't rehash everything that's already been said about this radio. I've owned mine for eight years, and I've awoken to its pleasant sound every morning. I keep it plugged in to a timer to use as my clock radio. It's one of those rare pleasant devices that just works. No fiddling or adjusting, just listening and enjoying the nice sound quality.I WILL point out one annoying deficiency and a remedy. I notice a small 60Hz AC hum from this radio, especially noticeable in the silence between spoken words. The hum probably comes in from the powerline, and I'm guessing the radio's internal AC to DC converter isn't quite well enough regulated or something. Whatever the cause, I unplugged the AC line cord, got a small, regulated, 12V "wall wart" power supply, and plugged it into the 12V jack on the back of the radio. Voila! The audible hum is completely gone!

Easy to tune and use table radio. Nothing fancy, no digital this-n-that, just a fantastic table radio. This is the second one we own, and this one is simply as good as the first one.

Can't keep a station in tune

To be sure, this little radio has great sound. If it's your intention to use it for playback from your iPod, it's a great choice. It's a really nice looking radio and has great sound at all volumes. The only major problem with the radio is the tuner. This is the issue that makes me yell and scream at the radio when I'm trying to listen to the news. It simply cannot keep a station tuned in for more than 30 seconds. I'll dial up an FM station, the light that measures signal strength will be beaming bright, and within a minute, the station is gone. The tuning knob is so sensitive that fine tuning is all but impossible. I'll literally touch the dial (not turn, but touch) and it'll alter the frequency. Buy it for the great sound, but NPR listeners beware... low frequency FM stations just don't stay tuned it.

Great Office or Bedroom Radio
on November 27, 2009

I bought this radio specifically for my office. I started with a Model Two w/ Model Subwoofer in my living room and have been extremely impressed with it. My wife and I really enjoy it and so I wanted one for my office.I found a very nice used Model One that was only a couple years old and in perfect shape. I use it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day and absolutely love it. The FM reception is great and the tuer is very easy to dial in even the toughest stations to receive. The AM is ok but I haven't used it much for that so I don't know if it's better or worse than any other radio. The sound quality is where this unit really shines. Even at extremely low volumes the clarity is wonderful. I often listen to talk radio and the voices come in crystal clear. The ease of use on the Model One is great as well. With three knobs and 2 lights, the controls are simple yet refined. They're very smooth. The only draw back that some other reviewers have mentioned is the low volume control. It would be nice to be able to have more control over the low volume.Overall, this product is awesome and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. Also, being able to hook up an external MP3 player is a nice feature that works well.

Simple design, lovely sound.

What I wanted:* a small radio for my small apartment, with* a simple design,* warm, rich sound, and* the ability to play my ipod.I got what I was looking for, and also like the old-fashioned physicality of a tuning knob over a digital display (I spend enough time in front of screens as it is--and circles are nice). The price seemed steep, but now that I listen to this radio for hours every day, news in the morning and music in the evening while I work, it's worth it.Granted, I've never owned a super-high-end stereo system, so I can't compare it to that. But I would say that this sounds as good as a nice solid stereo with pure sound to an ordinary music lover.I usually play the Tivoli fairly quietly (my roommate can't hear it) and listen mostly to jazz, blues, classical, and latin music. If you're looking for a radio to crank up the electric guitar to ear-blast, or need a sternum-vibrating bass in order to enjoy the kind of music you like, this may or may not work out for you (I'd go test it for those qualities now, but the walls are thin, it's after midnight, and my neighbors are nice people.). If you have more modest decibel needs and like a pleasant, balanced sound, I think you'll enjoy this radio.

Big sound from a small box

The Trivoli is in a basement studio and fills the room with a high quality sound at a modest loudness levels. It is perfect for our space. Each control is precise and has an excellent feel. Tuning with the variable brightness LED works well. Nice retro look.

Good looks. Horrible audio

The audio quality of this radio is really poor. Yes, I know it only has one speaker, but I'm not talking about lack of stereo. The tonal quality is so bad I can barely stand to listen to it. I only give it a 2nd star for a pleasing appearance.
