Great device but has issues

When it’s working correctly, the edge 1050 is amazing. However, periodically turn it on and it will Turn off momentarily every 10 seconds or so. This won’t affect a ride that is being recorded, but is a nuisance as the screen goes blank

My 'detailed' comparison of my Edge 1050 to my 840
on November 24, 2024
Posted by: John-yD
[This may be an update to a previous review] I upgraded from the Edge 840 to the 1050 with the following realized: On the POSITIVE: In addition to the phenomenal screen and sufficient battery life already noted by others — (1) I found the 1050's GPS connection more accurate and sensitive, e.g., when going up a steep, complex hill, the GPS more often stayed on my current track — noting that the slowest speed that can be set on the 1050 is 3 mph (ie, relative to GPS’s ‘horizontal view of a hill) vs the 6 mph on the 840. This proved important to me as I now ride upon more complex MTB trails that may triple-criss-cross, often getting off my MTB because, at 71 years young, I do not want to fall upon the many large rocks along a recently found, fun MTB trail. The [re-]routing upon resuming more often/more quickly recovers accuracy so that I can resume upon the correct criss-crossed path. (2) Though not perfect, the 1050’s screen is more responsive to wet glove maneuvering on a wet screen in rain than my 840. Please NOTE that Garmin had advised me that putting on a screen protector (then, 840) would void its warranty — (partly) due to reducing the integrity of the screen (eg. water intrusion) after lifting off the protector. (3) Because I’m 71 years young, I have the current heart beat per minute (BPM) window included on every screen I use so that I do not go above my max heart rate selected -- thus alarmed set (thus constantly gearing close to 85 cadence — I ride hard, keeping my heart rate above my lactate threshold value but below my max heart rate (within 80-94% of max!) which I can set by %, specified BPM, or via lactate threshold set — the 1050’s screen’s greater real-estate offers greater detail that enables me to add the BPM and %-grade windows without sacrificing the relevant map detail that I have set at the max detail -- detail not achievable on the 840 with those two windows added. (4) Sharp turn warnings are more accurate and present themselves relevant to the speed I’m traveling, whether slow (MTB trails) or fast (eg, horse trails). (5) I also use the offered graphic for current BPM data that offers me a glance to a short history of BPM data that is relevant particularly when approaching, transiting, and thereafter recovering from transversing a steep, complex hill. (6) The ClimbPro screen automatically presents itself on longer, steep climbs presenting an appreciated, where I am upon an accurate hill profile graphic while also, as already noted, adding my current BPM and %-grade windows — like the 840, this does crowd the map graphic to little use — though the map graphic is not so relevant during the climb as the purpose of the ClimbPro data profile graphic. (7) Relative to someone’s comment upon a Garmin Board about not finding how to access his Edge data on the Garmin web site: Adding connection to SRAM Eagle (now in addition to Shimano) via the Garmin Connect phone app, I access my Garmin 1050 generated data upon the SRAM site (via my phone’s Garmin Connect app or by computer accessing my SRAM login on the web.) The SRAM “gear” data nicely compliments the Garmin data including a geographic display of the route(s) taken that can be saved for comparisons. I have not yet determined (maybe a recommendation) whether I can select means to overlay (selection of specific or range of) gear, BPM , or other data upon the ride graphic.
On the NEGATIVE: The menu layout is still frustrating, especially when I have greatly tired; not yet able to quickly navigate the screens, such as selecting: return routing upon the same trail (that I had pedaled to), reroute to a ride's start (from home) via shortest/quickest/least hill selections; initial confusion when determining how to ‘reset’ the ride’s screen data — without accidentally resetting the whole of my 1050 selection configuration. HOWEVER, (1) I find the 1050's screen menu display better than the 840's side buttons for screen maneuvering. I sometimes “play” with my 1050 at home thinking through a ride or combination of rides and how I would use the 1050 for acquiring data for each of those segments — thereby reducing but not yet eliminating my “beginners.” SO, I am very pleased that I purchased the 1050 in replacing my 840.

Upgraded from 540 to 1050
on November 24, 2024

Like the larger, much clearer screen and longer battery life. I probably only use 20% of what this thing can do. I track mileage, speed, average speed, time, heart rate, cadence and calories. With Di2, I also show gears, which I’m really enjoying. All are clearly visible on one screen. Nice having warnings and text messages appear while riding. Easy to review after rides and store courses. Well made and yes expensive for how I use it. But it’s for the sport I love and I enjoy having the best.

1050 Pro's & Cons
on November 27, 2024

I've had my Garmin 1050 for about a month and love the larger lettering, and the overall simplicity. The screens are different from the 1030 plus, but with a truly minor learning curve I have to say are also much simpler and intuitive. My only issue so far has been with the unit freezing, so far it's only happened once. What concerned me was when I contacted Garmin I was told it was an issue they were aware of and a fix would be pushed out shortly. Fingers crossed...

Great device but…..

I wanted to change out my old Wahoo Element bolt for something with a bigger interface and color. This Garmin Edge 1050 looks great but I can’t believe the charging cable doesn’t have a USB on one end. I’ve no way of charging it and now have to go and buy an adapter, simply so I can charge it!
