Sennheiser HD 600 is a Worthy Upgrade for Mixing

These open back headphones are well regarded in the studio mixing community, and I can hear why. They let you hear a clean, clear, mostly truthful / accurate representation of the music that helps your mixes translate well across other systems. The sound is pretty flat and very realistic but there is a slight (not too pronounced) mid-range boost which allows you to hear vocals, reverbs, etc. better.
New, these headphones sell for $580 CDN but I bought them from Best Buy Canada for $450 during a sale. My Sennheiser HD400PRO open-back do sound similar but the HD600 do sound better, more open and deeper, with better bass (but not exaggerated). My Sony MDR-7506 and Audio Technica ATH-M40X closed-back headphones sound very different, the closed-back design is better for tracking but the open-back HD600 sounds so much better for mixing, it's no contest.
The HD600 needs ample power from the headphone amp, otherwise they will be pretty quiet. They also do not seem or feel as strongly built as the Audio Technica heaphones, though many online say they last a long time.
It's crazy how expensive headphones can get now, but today's technology allows for some incredible headphones that are as good as a good set of monitors. Many home studios have less than ideal room acoustics and so a reliable set of phones is crucial, for mixing alongside a good set of monitors. This is the first set of headphones that I paid over $250 CDN for and I feel the upgraded sound is well worth it. They are more reliable for mixing and they sound so much better for pure, enjoyable listening.
