I’ve owned two of these popcorn makers, and both broke in the exact same way. The plastic hinges that attach the heating plate to the base broke. My first popcorn maker actually lasted a few years, which I why I recently purchased a new one. This newer one broke after less than 5 uses.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Trying this one to replace a West Bend Stir Crazy that had begun to leave many unpopped kernels and to leak too much oil. This one can leak too so follow the instructions to use no more than a tablespoon of oil. I prefer olive oil but the instructions say no, switch to a higher temp oil like canola. The Cuisinart seems to get hotter so be sure to remove the popcorn when popping stops or you'll get some burning, i.e. don't leave it unattended. It does pop almost every kernel every time (so far)! The removable and washable popping base is a real plus as is the very sturdy clear plastic bowl. Overall, the Cuisinart seems well made. I hope it will last me a while as I use it almost every day!

Don’t like it in fact I would like to return it. It pops a good batch and a bad batch and a lot of Kernels are wasted. Many years ago, I had a west Bend stir crazy and it was my favorite. I replaced it with another stir crazy and it had changed. Didn’t like it. Got rid of it and bought a stove top maker with a crank handle. Tried it for a bit and didn’t like it. I’m back to good old fashioned stovetop method in a pan!

In theory this could be a nice popcorn popper. But the major flaw is that just picking up the popper releases the top from the bottom. Dropped 2x & now broken beyond use.

This is our 2nd one in about a year. Makes the best popcorn. We use a cooking grade (high heat) olive oil and Redenbacher white popping corn, then add some Morton sea salt after done. Instructions say dishwasher safe, but cover cracked in dishwasher after about 6 months of heavy use during covid. I glued it several times but it kept cracking in different locations. A complete new unit was about 2x cost of a cover so just purchased a whole new unit and are saving the other new parts. With the new one, we are hand washing the cover and still putting other parts in dishwasher. So far so good. Still the best popcorn we've ever made at home.
