I was bit nervous about using the Ooni for the 1st time, turned out 4 decent pizzas. The following week we had our 1st pizza party for friends, again turned out some decent well received pizzas. I Will certainly be experimenting over the summer.
I bought the Karu 2 as a housewarming gift for my son and his partner. They love it. They’ve been using a mix of charcoal and wood to burn, but think they’ll move to gas, purely for convenience. I chose this model to give them the choice. Once heated fully, the pizza’s are ready within a minute or 2, and they taste great!
The Ooni Karu 2 is a high quality well built pizza oven. Every component feels well designed and solid. There are useful guides and advice. The result is that you can quickly become competent in making pizzas for large groups with ease. My first pizza was a flop because I didn’t use semolina grains and it stuck to the paddle, then to the oven and left quite a mess on my brand new oven. The next time I got semolina grains and pizza 2 & 3 were excellent. Last night I cooked 10 pizzas and now have friends wanting one. I chose the gas burner that comes as standard and the wood burner option (yet to use this option). The ovens premium price reflects premium quality. I like it so much I’ve built a trolley from upcycled pallet wood!
It’s an expensive investment, then you need an expensive table then you need gloves then you need a peel then you need a two gauge as the one on the over doesn’t seem to register correct, then you need the wood. First time I went through almost half the box of expensive wood from Ooni. Pizza was burnt, tried two times and it wasn’t even all the way in the red after two hours of heating up. I will change ratings if my experience gets better. Biggest issue I have is the wood/ coal box drains seem to fit well so it quickly looses heat and you have to add more wood????
