[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have enjoyed Mario Kart for almost as long as I have enjoyed Lego, dating back to the Super Nintendo. This set is a great way to remember all of the fun times playing Mario Kart as well as spend quality time building it together with my daughter. I really enjoyed the details of the castle and carts. I didn't expect the shells to work, that was a fun surprise from Lego. As always the design is on point and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Highly recommended!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Every Mario Kart fan has a love–hate relationship with Bowser’s Castle. It’s the track that makes your palms sweat: lava pits, Thwomps crashing down, and fire bars spinning just when you think you’ve got the perfect lead. LEGO’s Mario Kart™ – Bowser’s Castle (72039) set takes all that chaotic energy and transforms it into a brick-built playset that’s as much fun to display as it is to race through.
First Impressions At 1,068 pieces, this isn’t a casual afternoon build—it’s a project. Opening the box, you’re greeted by bold orange lava elements, dark grey castle walls, and a handful of instantly recognizable character builds. The color palette alone screams “Mario Kart.” Before you even start, you know this set is going to capture the drama of the infamous track.
The Build The construction process is a nice balance of repetition and clever engineering. The castle gate feels substantial, with jagged towers and spiked accents that echo Bowser’s lair perfectly. What makes this set stand out is the way the design incorporates movement. The Fire Bar is mounted to spin, the Thwomp drops with a lever pull, and even the walls can fold open for different play setups. These aren’t just decorative details—they’re interactive traps straight out of the video game. As a builder, I appreciated that it wasn’t overly complex but still kept me engaged. The mechanisms are simple enough for younger builders to operate but satisfying enough that adults will admire the ingenuity.
The Characters & Karts No Bowser’s Castle would be complete without its namesake, and the brick-built Bowser included here doesn’t disappoint. He’s big, chunky, and surprisingly expressive for a pile of bricks. Alongside him is Yoshi, whose bright green figure pops beautifully against the darker tones of the castle. The real stars, though, are the two karts: Bowser’s ATV and Yoshi’s Mach 8. They’re sturdy, instantly recognizable, and race well across any flat surface. Whether you’re staging epic duels or simply admiring them on a shelf, they capture the joy of Mario Kart perfectly. Supporting characters—Thwomp, a Lava Bubble, and even a cheeky Banana—add extra personality. The Thwomp is particularly fun thanks to its dropping mechanism, which never gets old during play.
Play vs. Display This set lives in a sweet spot between toy and collector’s piece. On a shelf, the castle looks imposing and colorful, especially with the fiery orange pieces glowing under light. As a playset, it delivers hours of fun with moving traps, interactive obstacles, and the ability to integrate with LEGO Mario, Luigi, or Peach figures if you already own them. For younger builders, the action features will be irresistible. For adult fans, the nostalgia factor and display value make it worthwhile.
Final Thoughts The LEGO Mario Kart™ – Bowser’s Castle (72039) set is more than just another LEGO build—it’s a slice of video game history brought into the real world. It nails the atmosphere of the in-game track, balances fun building techniques with interactive play, and offers enough character variety to keep things interesting. It’s not the largest LEGO set you’ll ever tackle, but it doesn’t need to be. This is Mario Kart distilled: fast, fun, and just the right amount of chaos. Whether you’re buying it for a younger gamer or adding it to an adult collection, Bowser’s Castle is a winner’s circle build.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Lego build is massive! Perfect for any lover of Mario Brothers and Lego. Would make an excellent gift for the Holidays. Bowser and Yoshi are the cutest in Lego form!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My son absolutely love this! He enjoys the problem solving and having to put everything together. I like how there’s different options to purchase for the theme and bowser is his favorite.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the LEGO/Toys Campaign for free through Influenster in exchange for my honest opinion. I received the LEGO/Toys Mario Kart-Bowser's Castle Campaign. It arrived very well packaged and protected. The most excited were my husband and my three teenagers, who grabbed it excitedly and rushed to put it together like little kids at Christmas. This Bowser's Castle is for ages 9 and up. It has 1,068 pieces, most of which are medium to very small, divided into 10 marked and perfectly separated packages. There are three clearly explained and visually designed instructions for easy assembly. It also has a scan feature to see it in action. My husband and teenagers easily put it together in about four hours, and it helped them have a great and entertaining Sunday with the family. The only observation my children made was that this LEGO Super Mario buildable game, in order for them to have a much more complete experience, did not contain the interactive figures that are sold separately, but they were delighted with this gift that LEGO gave them through Influenster and they do recommend it is Fun and have a good price. (It is important to security and careful if there is a small child when it is being assembled because it has very small pieces).
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Received from influencer in exchange for my honest review. If your a Mario and lego fan this perfect its for ages 9+ it has a lot of pieces my kid loves the set he needed adult to help him. I would recommend for safety keeping it up high out of reach of toddlers-5y so they don't put the pieces in their mouth. It also a great collectors piece. Great under the Christmas tree surprise.
